Unable to Set External Drive as Capture Location

I'm stuggling to set up my external drive for recording game clips. I have a Seagate Portable 1TB 3.0 usb drive that I perfectly formatted to NTFS via my Windows computer.

When I plugged it into my Xbox One, I was prompted to format it, or use it for media. I chose not to format it, as I was instructed from Xbox Support's page on recording longer gameclips.

I then attempted to set this storage device as my capture location via Capture Settings> Capture Location. But, nothing besides internal storage showed up.

I then went to Settings> System> Storage and selected the external drive. Upon doing so I had the option to set it as my capture location. However, the drive still does not show up under Capture Settings> Capture Location and I am still unable to record
    longer clips. Please help.

    :)

    Hi There.

i would delete any captures that are on the console, as there is only limited space for captures

attach a external drive, and set the drive as the location for the captures, that should help

How do I record 16 minutes of blackout gameplay through theater mode?

You could set up an external hard drive specifically or captures.

    1. Plug a USB 3.0 (or faster) drive into your console.
    2. Press the Xbox button  to open the guide.
    3. Go to System > Settings > System >
      Storage.
    4. Go to your external drive and select Set as capture location.
    5. Your game clips and screenshots will be recorded to your external drive. To revert, set your internal drive as your capture location.

    Backup gaming clips

    Hello Kursaalflyer,

Thank you for getting back with the thread and I apologize for some delay in my end.

Based on the information provided, the USB you are using meets the requirement for an external drive to be used for back up of game captures and screenshots.

We would like to ask if your external drive was set as your capture location by going to these steps:

    • Plug a USB 3.0 (or faster) drive into your console.
    • Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
    • Go to Profile & system > Settings > System > Storage.
    • Go to your external drive and select Set as capture location.
    • Your game clips and screenshots will be recorded to your external drive. To revert, set your internal drive as your capture location.

Additionally, have you tried inserting your external drive to different port your Xbox Console and experiencing the same issue? And also, can you tell us if the USB is used only for backing up your captures and screenshots and no other files are being saved?

We look forward to your response. Kindly let us know, if there is any misunderstanding or clarifications of our description by sending us a reply.

    Sincerely,

Can you not use a 4TB hard disk for capturing clips on Xbox One X?

I just tried adding my Seagate Backup Plus portable USB3 hard disk with 3TB capacity for game capture purposes and it appears to work (I was able to assign it as capture location...haven't tried capturing any game play yet) as a capture location.

After you initialize and format your external HDD on your PC, did you create any folders on the external storage? In case it matters, I didn't after selecting GPT - Simple volume and format as NTFS with no file/folder compression enabled (in case the latter
    matters).

Did you rename your external drive during the format process? In case it matters, I did on mine and called it XBOXCLIPS1.

When you connected the HDD to the console, did it prompt you to use the drive for game or media storage? I selected media storage.

Did you go into Settings - System - Storage, select the HDD and then select Set as capture location? I did this in case it matters or is different than doing it via Settings - Preferences - Capture & share - Capture location (this UI location is also displayed
when using Xbox nexus button - move right to Capture & share - move down to Capture settings).

    Good luck!

Can't capture more than 30 seconds on USB

    Hello Krzysztof Pijarczyk,

    Greetings!

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

Based on the description, you are unable to record up to 1 hour using your external drive which was working before. Let us check and see on what we can do to help resolve your concern in a timely manner.

It is possible that your external drive was not set as your capture location in your Xbox settings because by default, the Xbox will record game clips to the internal storage, which has a limit of 30 seconds for 4K captures. It seems that the default storage for you recording was your internal drive of your console. We are going to check it though by following the steps below. We are going to set your external drive as your captures location and try recording more than 30 seconds if it will go through after checking and making sure that the USB was selected for your game capture location.

    Here are the steps:

    • Plug your external drive into a vacant USB port on your Xbox. Your Xbox will prompt you if you'd like to use the connect hard drive for media or games and apps. Make sure to select Use for media,
    • Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
    • Go to Profile & system > Settings > Preferences > Capture & share.
    • Select Capture location, and then choose your external drive.
After doing this, you can record game clips up to 1 hour long on your external drive. You can also transfer them to your PC for editing or sharing.

We look forward to your response. Kindly let us know, if there is any misunderstanding or clarifications of our description by sending us a reply.
