Unable to reinstall game after uninstalling it from another location

Hi,

I had a game (World War Z) included with my Game Pass subscription installed on an external drive, and was in the past able to play it without issue. I wanted to change its install location to an internal drive, so, with the drive containing it connected, chose to uninstall it from the Xbox App. When I then visit the game's page on the app (both with or without the external drive it was previously installed on connected), it offers the options "Update" and "Resume Install", neither of which do anything when selected. I'm therefore unable to install or play the game.

It doesn't appear in my library on the Xbox App, nor in Windows's list of installed Apps & Features. I already deleted my system's Delivery Optimization Files in case there was some data related to the game there.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi there howabe welcome to the community forum! Christopher here, an Xbox fan just like you and has been on Xbox for years already. I would really love to make your day by helping you out. I suggest you try these basic troubleshooting steps!

Open Settings, click Update and Security and then Windows Update;

Click Check for Updates;

Click the Download and Install Now option, if available;

Also, check the Microsoft Store for any updates on the Xbox apps and its services.

Then try this:

Go to windows settings > apps > search for gaming services app > click on it and select advanced options.

After that, click repair and then restore, open the app and try again.

Then do the same for the Xbox app:

Go to windows settings > apps > search for Xbox app > click on it and select advanced options.

After that, click repair and then restore, open the app and try again.

If it still doesn't work you're going to uninstall the games services using a powershell command, then you're going to open the gamepass app, it will ask you to download and install the game services again :

In the windows search bar type Powershell > Right click and select open as administrator > Type the command: "get-appxpackage Microsoft.GamingServices | remove-Appxpackage –allusers" > Wait for the process to finish and then restart the PC, then open your Xbox gamepass app, it will ask you to install the gaming services again, install it and try again.

Try uninstalling the game from your hdd.

If possible switch download locations.

Power cycle the console, and then reinstall the game.

After uninstalling the game I’m now unable to reinstall it. Xbox says I don’t own the game and won’t let me install it without purchasing it.

Hello ! Sorry that you are having issues with your game. Have you tried uninstalling and then reinstalling ? If not, try uninstalling the game from the drive E, and when reinstalling you should have a list of different locations to install the game to. I hope this helps !
