Unable to get free Gamertag change

Was told that “I updated my gamer tag” from 15 years ago. 15years that went unused by the way and that was where I used my 1 free gamer tag change. Although my old tag was not mentioned during signing up or synced. Is this common? How can my one free change be used on an account that sat for 15+ years idle and expired? Reaching out Via phone was a huge waste of time also.

It's correct you misunderstanding and assuming incorrectly that was in the later days

However it changed when.the new gamertag.system.came in where you choose your name again limited to 11 characters

When an account is created, the system would have generated a gamertag. If the user didn't like the name that was generated for them, and typed in one of their own, that was the free name change. Any changes after that the user had to pay the fee to change their gamertag.

Also, back in the 360 days, at the time of account creation, users were given a 30-day window to change a randomly generated tag for free or they forfeited the free change.

What you are saying doesn’t line up 100% with the written segment here. I don’t remember being given a gamertag when starting. Also, while I was on the phone, their reasoning for this was because my account from 08 was OG name and when I started new account I used my 1-time change. Which didn’t happen. At creation this year, I wasn’t presented with my old tag or a generated one. I created a unique gamertag from the start.

I was never given a randomly generated name nor an option to “update”. It was just an option to Create a gamertag.
