  1. Unable to download anything, even after extensive troubleshooting (Error code: 0x80073cf0)

Last night, I was trying to download an update for Sea of Thieves on the Xbox app on my Windows 11 device. It would start downloading for about a half a second, then immediately give an error message and stop. I have since gone through many different troubleshooting methods that I have looked up, but nothing has worked. I have ensured that I have enough space (491 GB available on the drive), I have verified a solid internet connection, and I've made sure everything else is up to date. I have completed the following: uninstalled and reinstalled the Xbox app, logged out and back in, restarted my device multiple times, uninstalled Sea of Thieves completely (still getting the exact same problem when I try to install it fresh), repaired the Xbox app and the gaming service through settings, ran SFC, ran the Windows store apps troubleshooter, tried multiple times throughout the past 16 hours in case it was Xbox server issues, updated Windows, and a few other file repair programs. I'm genuinely confused as to what could possibly be the problem at this point. It also doesn't help that the error code is extremely unhelpful in determining what's wrong; the description is "This may mean that your Xbox console has experienced an unexpected error." Any tips or things to try that I haven't already is much appreciated!

    :)

Unable to download anything, even after extensive troubleshooting (Error code: 0x80073cf0)

Anyone having this issue, after hours of frustration with this, finally have it working.

Do not, as you may be advised reformat and clean install Windows as its not necessary, as are most of the possible solutions that I have seen in various posts.

The main issue with Gaming Services is keys in the registry including ghost service entries in the registry, there is a version mismatch, if you ever get this error no matter what you try as long as they are there it will never install, thereby rendering your Game Pass Ultimate experience virtually useless.

When I first got this error "0x00000001", I reset Gaming Services, that then caused another error "0x80073D26", that's when I found the services in task manager which were effectively ghost entries doing nothing.

Firstly I reset Gaming Services, then proceeded with the following:

    1. Go to C:\Program Files\WindowsApps find 2 gaming services folders, take ownership and delete.

    2. Open RegEdit as an administrator and delete the following:

    Keys.
    [HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Classes\Local Settings\MrtCache\C:%5CProgram Files%5CWindowsApps%5CMicrosoft.GamingServices_2.45.11001.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe%5Cresources.pri]
    [HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Classes\Local Settings\MrtCache\C:%5CProgram Files%5CWindowsApps%5CMicrosoft.Gamingservices_2.45.11001.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe%5Cresources.pri\1d6937194966bce]
and all other Microsoft.Gamingservices versions in here

    Services.
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\GamingServices]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\GamingServicesNet]

The version numbers may be different depending on what you have installed.

    3. Restart your PC.

    4. Once restarted open Microsoft Store find Gaming Services and install, it will now work.

    Hope this helps.

Microsoft however your updating or installing gaming services, it has the potential to fail, if it fails the user is stuffed, took me hours to resolve this, the only advice I had was to, use PowerShell, reset various apps or to reformat and clean install, which for the majority of users is not an option, fix it.

Hope you're doing great today despite this Steven

May I know if you are able to install a different game?
This helps us to determine if the issue is only with Sea of thieves or if it's happening with other games

What about creating a new NTFS partition and try installing the game there?

Or if you try creating a new local administrator user and start the installation from there, the issue persists?

Thanks for the update, when you run the SFC tool, it didn't find any system corruptions?

May I know if you already tried reinstalling Microsoft store and it's components? (Method 2)

Or try reinstalling gaming services via powershell command:

Right-click the Windows Start button in the lower-left corner of the main screen, and then select Windows PowerShell (Admin).
In the Administrator: Windows PowerShell screen, type the following command and press Enter:
    Get-AppxPackage *gamingservices* -allusers | remove-appxpackage -allusers

In the same window, type the following commands and press Enter:
    Remove-Item -Path "HKLM:\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\GamingServices" -recurse

    Remove-Item -Path "HKLM:\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\GamingServicesNet" -recurse

    Restart your device.
Start the Xbox application. You should see a blue banner with the following message: "This app needs an extra component. Gaming Services is needed for playing some games. Administrator approval required. Install"
Select Install to reinstall Gaming Services and give it a new try once completed

**if the first command works but not the other two, don't worry. It's normal

Unable to download anything, even after extensive troubleshooting (Error code: 0x80073cf0)

Hi Josef! Thank you for your reply.

I just tried tried installing a couple other games and experienced the same error, so it isn't just Sea of Thieves. I also tried your other two suggestions, but unfortuately I'm still getting the same issue. However, creating a new NTFS partition seemed to work for a bit longer than usual before the error message appeared, if that means anything.

    I truly appreciate your help!
