trying to find a old friends details to contact

Unfortunately, there is no way to find other users unless you have their gamertag or unless you've played with them recently. If you know that you may have been in similar clubs or other groups or guilds within a game that would be the best way, but without a gamertag, there is not much you can do in terms of the Xbox Network capabilities.

if his/her profile still exists you can send a message.

Maybe the person still has the Xbox app on his/her phone and the message will reach him/her.

I think that's the only chance you have, if you don't know the real name of the person.
