Trying to access my minecraft account with old hotmail account

Having said this, if you do not have access to your account you can fill out the account recovery form, although what you mention is correct, accounts that are not used for a certain period of time are automatically deleted due to inactivity and this decision cannot be reversed if it's been a long time.

If you signed in with a new Microsoft account on your PS5, you will not be able to access your old Minecraft account that was linked to your previous Microsoft account.

To access your old Minecraft account, you will need to sign in to your PS5 with your old Microsoft account credentials. If you cannot remember your password, you can try to reset it using the Microsoft Account Recovery page.

If you are still unable to access your old Minecraft account, you may need to contact Minecraft support for further assistance. They may be able to help you recover your account or link your new Microsoft account to your old Minecraft account.

I signed into the gamertag/xbox account earlier today, realised it was linked to an old hotmail address, and was trying to change the associated MS account's email from that hotmail address to my gmail address.

the account connected to my old gamertag is a microsoft account, but it doesn't have @outlook or @hotmail) and the new email account that I want to be connected to my old gamertag is also a microsoft account but @gmail, not @outlook or @hotmail

Pretty sure you'll need the old email/password to be able to access the live account. And don't you need a Hotmail to be able to even make a live account? Just sign in to this website with the LiveID linked to that account.
