Trouble with Xbox, PC, HDMI Splitter and Capture Card - Help!

    Hi,

I am trying to help my son with his streaming set up, but I have hit a roadblock.

I did a little research and bought an HDMI splitter and a capture card.

I have the splitter plugged into the Xbox X, an HDMI cable from the splitter to the Xbox Monitor and an HDMI cable from the splitter into an external capture card. The capture card is then plugged into the PC via USB.

We downloaded and set up OBS and everything seemed to be working fine.

The problems we are now encountering are:

    1) Sometimes the picture quality on the Xbox monitor drops. It will be fine one moment and the next it is very blurry.

    2) When running both the Xbox and the PC at the same time and then turning off the PC, the Xbox monitor no longer shows the picture. I have to unplug the HDMI cables from both the TV and the splitter and plug them back in - all except for the cable going to the capture card (and in turn, PC).

Does anyone know how I can fix this?

    Thanks in advance.

For reference, the capture card I am using is this:

And the HDMI splitter is this: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08SR5HJFF/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I did try this splitter first, was having the problems so thought it was something to do with the HDCP (google search). Buying the above one instead did not work.

Trouble with Xbox, PC, HDMI Splitter and Capture Card - Help!

    Hi,

    Thanks for the reply.

I am setting this up with an Xbox Series X.

I did think that maybe it was a problem with the HDMI cables that I was using, so I tried using the cable that currently supplies our Sky Box, and the results were the same.

I really appreciate any help you can give.

    Thanks!

Trouble with Xbox, PC, HDMI Splitter and Capture Card - Help!

This problem is a tricky one, because the issue seems to lie either with the HDMI splitter, the capture card, or the HDMI cables that are in use.

I would like to know which Xbox console you have--if it's the Xbox One X or the Xbox Series X, which can impact on the amount of data that is being output, and in turn, can impact the video quality once it's being run through additional points and cables that don't all support the same quality of video that the included cables are meant to (I'm not trying to say that you can't buy those kinds of cables, I'm just using those hefty ones as an example).

For instance, the Xbox One X will output 1080p when playing games. The Xbox Series X will output 4k when playing games, almost 8 times the amount of data that the Xbox One X does.

You appear to have everything plugged in correctly from what I can gather based on your explanation, and if the Xbox console outputs the expected image quality when it's connected directly to the screen, it is likely that it's the items in-between that need evaluating.

I will do my best to see if it's the Xbox console causing any issues. If that's not the case, then my only recommendation is to make sure that the cables you're using from end-to-end can support the amount of data being transmitted from the console to the splitter, then from the splitter to the monitor and the capture card, individually.

    Xbox streaming

o set up your Xbox for streaming on two monitors using an Elgato capture card and an HDMI splitter, you can follow these steps:

    1. Connect Xbox to Elgato Capture Card:
      • Connect your Xbox to the input of your Elgato capture card using an HDMI cable.
      • Connect the output of the Elgato capture card to one of your monitors using another HDMI cable.
    2. Use an HDMI Splitter:
      • Connect the HDMI 1 input of the splitter to the output of the Elgato capture card.
      • Connect one HDMI output of the splitter to your first monitor.
      • Connect the second HDMI output of the splitter to your second monitor.
    3. Set Up the Monitors:
      • On your first monitor, you should be able to see your Xbox gameplay through the Elgato capture card.
      • On your second monitor, you can set it up to display the mirrored output from the HDMI splitter, which will show the same Xbox gameplay.
    4. Configure the Xbox:
      • On your Xbox, go to the Display & Sound settings.
      • Set the Display Mode to Duplicate (if available). This will ensure that the same output is sent to both the Elgato capture card and the HDMI splitter.
      • Adjust the resolution and other display settings to match the capabilities of your monitors.
    5. Configure Capture Software:
      • Open your preferred capture software on your PC (e.g., OBS, XSplit, or the software that came with your Elgato).
      • Make sure the capture software recognizes your Elgato capture card as a video source.
      • Configure the capture software to use the Elgato capture card as the video source for your streaming.
    6. Start Streaming:
      • With everything set up, you can now start streaming or recording your Xbox gameplay. Your Elgato capture card will capture the gameplay, and your monitors will display the output.
By following these steps, you should be able to display your Xbox gameplay on two screens while capturing it with your Elgato capture card for streaming or recording. Please note that the availability of certain settings may vary depending on your Xbox model and capture software, so be sure to consult the respective manuals or documentation for specific details.
