Three XBOX consoles, sharing GamePass - trying to play a 3-player game

Hi! We have two XBox Xs, one Xbox One. One GamePass account that we share for myself, son, and daughter. I am aware that if we want to play three players, one on each console, that a purchase would need to be made on a separate account. My question is, if I were to purchase the game through my teenage son's account digitally to one of the XBoxes, would he then have access as a third player while my daughter and I shared Game Pass? His account is linked to family (not sure if that matters). If that works, I would be fine with purchasing 1-2 games we all might enjoy together. Thank you!

    :)

Thank you! Right now, we are looking to play Deep Rock Galactic, which plays up to 4 players. It is the One version so it is compatible on both Series X and One. Good to know that Fortnite and Rocket League do not require a sub, thank you!

Also good to know they are looking at a family sub service - that will definitely be something we would be interested in.

Not sure whether to try buying the game first without the 2nd Game Pass sub, or to try the 2nd Game Pass sub first.

Thank you, Gerardo! I currently have Game Pass Ultimate. So if I'm understanding this correctly, the net result would be the purchase of the game in question on Console 3, plus a second Game Pass account for my son. Wow, that is a bit disappointing. I suppose one way to save would be to drop Ultimate to Core, and add another Core account for my son, which may only add an additional $5/month or so to the total.

Does the above sound feasible? Meaning two Game Pass Core subscriptions on the two XBox X consoles, one in my account and one on my son's account (he's 13), along with the purchase of the one or two games on one of the XBox Xs that we want to play as a threesome?

One last question: if my son and I have a separate Game Pass Core accounts and the game or games are free on Game Pass, do we even need to purchase the game again? Using two separate Game Pass accounts, I could share mine with my daughter while my son uses his own account.

Thank you kindly for your help with this.

Hi again Chad, don't worry, it's always a pleasure to help!

I agree with you, the best option in this situation is to purchase the game from your child's profile along with a Game Pass Core subscription so that they can play online.

    Happy Holidays!

    Kind regards,
    Gerardo.

Hi there Plmreldritch, my name is Gerardo, and I'm an Xbox player, just like you. I'll be happy to assist you with any questions or concerns you may have.

It's important to know that it's only possible to share subscriptions and game purchases with one Xbox console at a time. This means that to achieve what you're trying to do, you would need to do it as follows:

    - On console number 1, the account that initially bought the game or subscription will have the ability to play using that particular account.

    - On console number 2, where the account that bought the subscription/game is designated as the Home Xbox, anyone can play from any profile. This is because sharing licenses on the console allows any linked account to access the licenses associated with the account set as the Home Xbox on that console.

    - On console number 3, the account playing from that console will have to buy the game, as licenses cannot be shared on more than one console at the same time. Just remember that if you buy games using the profile for this console, you'll need to get at least Game Pass Core in order to be able to play online.

I hope I've explained it clearly as it can be confusing. If you have any doubts, please let me know.

    Kind regards,
    Gerardo.

Gerardo, thank you and apologies, one last question.

Is it best to purchase the game on the "home XBox" or okay on a second Xbox - would it even matter as long as I purchase it from his profile and he has his own GamePass?

    Thank you again!

    Best,

    Chad
