    The Importance of Restoring the 15 Character Count of Gamertags


    A few weeks back Xbox Live made some radical changes to Gamertags. The move is sold as an increase in available characters which can be used to create a Gamertag. However this comes at a bizarre and unnecessary trade off: Characters counts were decreased from 15 to 12. Unoriginal Gamertags get appended with numbers. This does technically bump the total to 12 characters of your choosing + # and 4 random numbers. But I don’t think gamers want that.

    It’s nice that we can now include Chinese and Japanese characters, but many brands have names longer than 12 letters and aren’t going to appear official with a series of non-sequitur numbers attached.

    I realized this change because the day it happened I created a new account for my YouTube channel, which with its 13 count name left me out of luck. So instead of being able to tell teammates to subscribe to my channel by pointing out a matching Gamertag, I have to continue the process of spelling it out over game chat. But this change doesn’t affect just me. Suppose a startup wants to do a promotion to reach gamers. They’ll likely side with PlayStation Network as their 16 character count will allow them to make an account with official branding. How many indie devs have a name with 12 or fewer letters?

    I’d like to see the character count for XBL raised back to 15 if not 20. It doesn’t make sense to decrease options as availability of original names shrinks. It’s not like there’s a physical shortage so we must ration supplies.

    Update: If I try a gamertag with 14 or less characters, it seems to move forward. However the character limit is supposed to be 15 and the new gamertag I want has 15 characters. :-(

    Partially true. Gamertags can have up to 12 (or 13) characters, if they choose one that's already taken, then they will be assigned a suffix.
