  1. The future of Xbox series solid state drives

Okay I have had a big concern about the future of the Xbox series solid state drives. As game company’s produce more and more series enhanced games and the bigger they get what happens when we fill the internal storage and solid state drive storage? There’s only one slot on the consoles for one. It’s crazy that a 1tb drive is 150$ and a 2tb is 300$. I can buy a 4tb external for 120$ but can’t run series games on it. So I’m wondering if there will be an adapter for the solid state drives or will there be external usb drives that can run series games. When I got my series x it’s stated it has 1tb of internal storage but I only had 879gbs when I first booted it up. Soon company’s are gonna be fighting just for my storage space on my console and I play a vast amount of games but I prefer to not be so limited on how many games I can play with out having to install or transfers others

I want to hear other peoples opinions on this matter and see how you all feel about it.

    :)

That’s where my concern is. What happens when you fill your Xbox internal storage and your solid state drive? There’s no other way to expand further passed that. If they added 2 slots instead of one I don’t think it would be a big deal. I play a lot of different games and it’s just a concern that I’ll have to really pick and choose what games a want to have stay and have go.

    Hello magnusob187,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

We understand that you are worried about running out of storage space on your console as Xbox produce more and more Xbox Series enhanced games.

Currently, the Xbox Series X|S consoles only support internal solid-state drives for running series games. However, Seagate Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X delivers additional external memory while maintaining the same peak speed and performance as the console's internal SSD.

Regarding the cost of solid-state drives, it is important to note that the prices of these drives are determined by the market and the cost of production. As technology advances, the cost of solid-state drives is expected to decrease over time.

In the meantime, you can manage your storage space by uninstalling games that you are not currently playing and transferring games to an external drive that can run non-series games. This will help you free up space on your console for new games.

I hope this information helps. If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to ask.

    Sincerely,

There is you arent understanding the tech

Unlike HDD they are hotswappable you have have 1-2 drives you just swap them.out like memory cards

    This includes Sony's ps5

You can't transport a drive between things without formating

Next gen games are designed not to rely on buses

They expect to access the gpu cpu and ram directly

At 4.8gbps xbox or 4.5-9gbps on ps5 (external nvme port of the ps5 is limited to 4.5 gbps)

Not to mention they have a higher life expectancy 5-10 years unlike hdds which are mechanical or ssd susceptible to corruption from falls read write wearing down the surface

Nvme are chips not surfaces that have to be changed constantly

Even pcs have done away with hdds you get standard nvme nowadays with an option to use slow.mechanical or ssd drives

Just like we went from floppy disk to CD and zip drives to DVD to bluray

Technology always improves and get better

USB will improve.but there is limits like buses etc

First that's normal as there is always reserve space for system files and updates ro kwwo the system running

Well no as there is no adapter that cam turn a 500mbps ssd into a 4.8gbps direct access

No hdd you can buy at 130 for 4tb will ever be fast enough

2tb goes for 200 and a completely different tech

HDD are bottlenecks because you are sitting behind the buses usb pci north bridge ram cpu gpu

Vs nvme tech which runs at 4.8gbps with 16 paths to cpu memory and gpu without being limited by bus

Not to mention it has to get past the compression processor /security chip

To be clear it's not a limitation of the xbox but the technology you are asking for

USB will never be as fast as nvme because of the bottlenecks
