An external hard drive used on the One will work for the Series S/X, but won't have the exact same performance as the one created for the Series S/X.

Your current drive will be usable on the Series S/X. For next gen. games and for games with Smart delivery, you will not be able to get the performance needed, but for x360 games it will run just fine.

I'm pretty sure there will be more customization options on the Xbox Series X dashboard.

This. I think they should add more customization options first. This way they can then just add the specific customization for the different items, and with the upcoming Xbox Series X it would be nice to have a broader set of options to customize the possible
new controllers along with the series 2 elite.
