synchronising x box points across two laptops with the same account

You're X Box should be getting roughly the same as your laptop. A lot of variable come into play...How far is your X Box away from your router (Is your laptop much closer?), hardwired or wireless? Open ports? Is your X Box prioritized on your network? Etc..

My X Box is farther away than my laptop yet still gets the same speeds; the only thing different is my ping is usually slightly higher, and that can be attributed to using M.S. servers while doing the test for the X1 as opposed to speedtest on my other equipment.

your case is the fact that you are both trying to use the same account at the same time. Since playing with the same account in different consoles at the same time is impossible, the way to achieve your request would be to mark your console as a home console
by your son's account, and then once the console is set as a home console, log in with your own separate account to play the game. You will find below the official link to everything you need to know about home sharing in case you were curious about other
aspects of the feature. To set your console as a home console, sign in with your son's account and you can follow the steps provided in the link below on the "Designate an Xbox console as your home console" option.

I had the same problem my cord and modem work for my laptop. I even borrowed a friends x-box which worked for a while then same issues. Is there some reason or way a cable or modem could damage the port on my x- box?

Can you send a link to instructions to set up two accounts ? Two X-box accounts or two Microsoft accounts ?
