Successfully cleaned Xbox One X, upgraded internal to SSD, and replaced stock thermal paste...

I recently opened up my XBox One X to replace my harddrive for an SSD. While I was at it, I replaced the thermal paste. It was pretty much rock solid on my XBox so the heat transfer between the APU and the cooler must have been extremely poor. If you are
comfortable opening it up and replacing the thermal paste, I really recommend you do so.

There are several videos on YouTube that walks you through the process, and the X is really easy to work on.

Following on from the previous replies, if your console is old and out of warranty and it's in a well-ventilated area and seems to be free of dust, sometimes cleaning it (internally) and replacing the thermal paste will fix that issue, but it should only be done if you know exactly what you're doing.

For example, I had an Xbox One X that wasn't overheating, but the fan was ramping up really loud at times. I cracked it open and found that the thermal paste was all dry and hard, so I cleaned it off and replaced it with some fresh, good quality paste, and the fan never ramped up loud again.

But yeah, only consider the above if the other advice doesn't work, if the console is out of warranty, and if you (or someone you know who can do it for you) know what you're doing.

it could be an issue with thermals, ie fan not working correctly, internal dust build up or even the thermal pad/paste.

best bet is to check and clean vents if that does not work then sending to microsoft for repair.

Xbox Series X games / upgrades / updates has to be installed onto the Series X internal or expansion card SSD,

You can have Xbox One games on your external hard drive that will get an Series X upgrade but the games will need to be transferred to the Series X and then the Series X upgrade will need to be downloaded onto the Series X SSD,

As an example...

I have Marvel Avengers on my external hard drive that will get the Series X upgrade and I will transfer the game over to the Series X SSD ready to download and update the game to the Series X version when available.
