Can understand your difficulty.

Here are two options.

1.Buy an elite controller which has more durability and button mapping options.

(This option can be considered if your button smashing is less)

2.Go to Settings-Devices and Streaming-Accessories-Select Configure under Controller Image.

Select a profile or create new one and remap buttons as you desire.

So I tried remapping buttons using a regular controller but when I then plugged in the steering wheel I was unable to access that facility.

If you have smartglass on iOS or android phones or the Xbox app on a windows phone or surface then you can log into that and use the controller function to access the A button. Use that to remap the controller (I'm assuming it's a standard wireless one).
