Starfield Save Games Missing/Lost (then restored) - GamePass SF Save Games location?

EDIT: After running Xbox App repair on Starfield, redownloading 113+ GB, my save games are back!!!!

Still not sure where save game files are located. I would VERY much like to backup my saves manually, in case this same issue occurs again.

There are many random files under Profile - AppData (full path below), as suggested by one internet source. However, I'm hesitant to backup then clear these files as a test, lest I have to redownload another 100GB and potentially not have my saves restored.

    C:\Users\<my profile>\AppData\Local\Packages\BethesdaSoftworks.ProjectGold_3275kfvn8vcwc\SystemAppData\wgs\

Appreciate any suggestions for manually backing up my Starfield GamePass Save Game files,

    Blue

== Leaving my original 'lost saves' details below for reference, in case this helps any others with similar concerns.

BEWARE nVidia GeForce Experience app, especially if you had been running Starfield from Xbox app with non standard game install location...

    =========================================

One week in, my Starfiled save game files are gone - Windows GamePass.

Was experiencing performance issues (9600k & 3080ti). Didn't occur initially, few days of playing quite fine - albeit not at much above 30fps, granted, with all Ultra settings. I had thought to give DLSS Reshade mod a try. Unfortunately, that not only didn't improve performance (or quality), I then was experiencing frequent stuttering/lockups/audio cutting out.

After a fair bit of attempting to resolve shuddering/audio-cut-outs, including diabling DLSS reShare, setting all to LOW, reboot, ensuring no other programs running, etc...

I thought to try update to latest nVidia drives + GeForce Experience. Was previously running ~July drivers without GFE.

Here, I made the nearly fatal mistake of launching StarField from GeForce Experience app, where I had been launching from Xbox app... after which, the only option is 'New Game'.... One week's progress gone?!?

Ironically, I had previously attempted to locate Save Game files location, when performance issues started. I had considered using Xbox App's REPAIR feature, but was concerned with the warning that pops up (when first clicking this function in Xbox App) indicating Save Games may not be saved if using this function!!!??!!?? Turns out, it got me before I could even run repair!

I've looked for a number of folders, suggested by various internet sources, where Starfield save games should be located:

C:\Users\<my profile>\Documents\My Games\Starfield *no saves folder at all!

    C:\Users\<my profile>\AppData\Local\Packages\BethesdaSoftworks.ProjectGold_3275kfvn8vcwc\SystemAppData\wgs

    C:\Games\Starfield\*.*

Searched entire drive for SFS files

Perhaps most relevant, I've noticed nVidia GeForce Experience shows what I am presuming is the default Xbox Windows App install location for Starfield:

    C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\BethesdaSoftworks.ProjectGold_1.7.23.0_x64__3275kfvn8vcwc\

Where as I had installed C:\Games\StarField (custom game install location set in Xbox App)

Think this might be the end of Starfield for me. Not sure I can enjoy playing what would likely be a large number of hours.... fearing all the while that my SaveGames may become mysteriously lost.

Hoping someone may have ideas I could try? Thanks in advance to any who are taking a break from their explorations to help out a stranded and grounded would-be explorer!

*Currently running Xbox App repair on Starfield now, as some internet sources have suggested this might recover Saves...

    :)

Starfield Save Games Missing/Lost (then restored) - GamePass SF Save Games location?

could there be a reason i can't find the BethesdaSoftworks.ProjectGold file? im on the right location but all i find is randomly numbered files and different named ones. no BethesdaSoftworks.ProjectGold file though. could that be why i dont have my recent saves?. I have the earliest saves from the playthrough but lost 20ish levels and a NG+ file from this recent update. i have moved the game file in steam from the original installation folder before noticing lost saves but haven't found them there either. I did check the Steam cloud but they mirror the mix matched files that i currently have from save1 to save100 then 102-4 then 107 when it should be around save130 or 150. any help would be appreciated but starting to think those hours are gone.

How about MS address the issue of only allotting 1GB Cloud storage for XBOX and Windows PC users playing through the XBOX app? This is 2023 where we are in an technical era of having multiple TB sized SSDs. I work in IT and I know that MS has specific technologies that allow a system to dynamically adjust the size available on a disk. Why not implement something like that? At the very least all XBOX and PC players using the XBOX app should be bumped up to 5GB of cloud storage. Also, like Steam, allow us to turn off cloud storage completely and give us the option of relying on our own PC storage space.

I have put over 200 hours in this game and the save folder size has grown to 30MB. This in turn has reduced the number of saves I can do before I get a "running out of space" warning. I'm genuinely concerned that the save files will grow to a size that will prevent me from saving at all.

    This is absolutely ridiculous!

Starfield Save Games Missing/Lost (then restored) - GamePass SF Save Games location?

    Hi b1u3,

Thank you for reaching Microsoft Community. We appreciate for sharing your concern to us.

I'm sorry to hear that you lost your Starfield save game files. The location of the save game files for GamePass games can vary depending on the game. However, for Starfield, the save game files are located in the following folder:

    C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Local\Packages\BethesdaSoftworks.ProjectGold_3275kfvn8vcwc\SystemAppData\wgs

If you can’t find these files, make sure to check the Hidden Items option in the View tab. If your save games are missing or lost, you might want to try restoring them from a backup if you have one. If you don’t have a backup, unfortunately, there might not be a way to recover them. In the future, it’s a good idea to regularly back up your save files to prevent loss.

To manually backup your save game files, you can copy the entire "wgs" folder to a different location, such as an external hard drive. This will allow you to restore your save game files if they are lost again in the future.

Losing valuable information of important files data can be a significant setback. I empathize with the challenge you're facing right now and the impact it can have on your productivity and peace of mind.

    Kind regards,

    Lavenia

    Starfield saves

    Hi Tylon001

    Greetings!

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

Upon reading the description you have posted, it seems that you have an issue with Xbox wherein you want to know if you can save your game progress to your local PC storage and unto the cloud. As you were unable to locate your game save files when you try to search it on your end.

We understand, that you are quite at loss right now. As you were unable to locate the game save progress of your Starfield game. That is why we will do our best to provide you with the best possible options that you can try.

By the way, here are the steps we would like you to try:

If you want to save your game progress in Starfield from both local storage and cloud, you need to know where to find the game save files and how to back them up. Depending on whether you are playing Starfield on Steam or Xbox Game Pass, the game save file location may vary. Here are the possible locations for each platform:

    • Steam: C:\Users_your_username_here_\Documents\My Games\Starfield\Saves1

    • Xbox Game Pass: C:\Users_your_username_here_\AppData\Local\Packages\BethesdaSoftworks.ProjectGold_3275kfvn8vcwc\SystemAppData\wgs_string_of_numbers2

To back up your game save files from local storage, you can follow these steps:

    • Open File Explorer and go to the game save file location of your choice.

    • Copy the entire Starfield folder or the specific save files you want to back up and paste them into another folder somewhere else. You can also rename the folder or the files to indicate the date or the mission of your progress.

To restore your game save files, simply copy the backup files and paste them back into the original game save file location.

To back up your game save files from cloud, you need to have cloud saves enabled on your platform. Steam and Xbox Game Pass will automatically sync your game progress to their online cloud servers. You can also find a local copy of your cloud saves in these locations:

    • Steam: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\click on your user number (different for everyone)\1716740 > remote > Saves

    • Xbox Game Pass: C:\Users_your_username_here_\AppData\Local\Packages\BethesdaSoftworks.ProjectGold_3275kfvn8vcwc\SystemAppData\wgs_string_of_numbers

To restore your game save files from cloud, you need to have cloud saves enabled on your platform. Steam and Xbox Game Pass will automatically download your game progress from their online cloud servers. You can also copy the local copy of your cloud saves and paste them into the original game save file location.

Let me know if this helps,

    Sincerely

    Khou Sun
