special characters in names

"At this time we’re focusing on alphabet-based words so that players can easily find one another"

The error message you’re seeing indicates that your account name contains a symbol that is not allowed. Certain special characters are not permitted in user names that you create in Microsoft. These special characters include but aren’t limited to the following characters: @, ., &, #, and +.

To resolve this issue, you can try changing your account name to one that does not contain any of these special characters. If you need to use a special character in your account name, you can use an underscore (_) anywhere in the name, including at the beginning or end of the name.

I found the solution. I had one special character in my name. I uninstalled windows and reinstalled. Then changed the name without special characters and everything worked. Took a while but was worth
it!

Depends on what their first name is, are you putting any special characters into the name field or a space maybe ?

Does it look similar to your name here with the special characters? If so, that's why. The new gamertag policy allows special characters, but in games or areas that have not been updated to work with that, it will show your last gamertag.
