Normally it can take up to 72 hours. With what is going on in the world right now it may take longer.

If they verify ownership they will send you an email to the new account they had you make saying everything has been transferred to the new account and you can now use that email address to sign in with your account.

Ok, thanks a lot for the help. Do you know if the account that's been hacked has been locked? I don't want the hacker having free range on all my progress and in-game items.

it is very likely that if the friend's old account was hacked that whoever did it would send messages to everyone on the account's friends list.

in your post you say that it is the friend's "old account". is the friend using a different new account now because their original account was hacked? if this is the case then it I would say that it is definitely the hacker using the account to send offensive
messages rather than risking getting their own account banned

If you can still sign into these forums using that gamertag, you are still in control of that account. If someone sends you a message saying that they "hacked" your account, that DOES NOT mean they actually "hacked" anything.
Usually they are only trying to scare you. You should file a complaint on that person through the tools on your console.
