So... Will We Ever Actually Own The "Xbox One" Games With Gold Or Will We Always...

Only Have Them As Long As We Have A Gold Subscription?

I know we get to keep 360 titles given out with Games For Gold. (insert woopity doo here)

When Xbox One was new, I understood not being able to keep Xbox One titles since there weren't many. (insert duh here)

But...

Now... there are more than enough titles IMO and since most titles given aren't exactly AAA Titles, I am wondering if we shall ever actually get to keep them without a gold subscription.

Backwards compatability question.

Yes. The games are still on the xbox store you can buy them. New games with gold will also be backwards compatible so you should just be able to stay gold with your xbox one and collect 360 games to play on your xbox one.

 

Purchasing Games with Gold.

On the Xbox One, a Game with Gold that is redeemed/downloaded isn't actually owned like it is on Xbox 360. I decided to purchase both Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition and Thief when they were on sale (after downloading them with Game with Gold) so I can own
a copy of the games should I ever choose not to renew my Gold subscription. However, despite purchasing both, the Xbox Store always shows "Get a Copy for $34.99 (or whatever the respective price is week to week)", when I click it, it says that it will charge
me again if I purchase the game despite buying it already. Is there anyway to see if I actually own the games and have access to them without Gold besides actually cancelling by Gold subscription and testing them out? Thanks.

The only people that know will be Microsoft, may want to ask someone there. All of our answers will be pretty much guess work, heck you may as well go and ask a magic 8 ball.

That would be between the publishers and Microsoft and game publishers. I don't work for MS or have any inside knowledge, but Microsoft must have to make deals with publishers to release either their Xbox 360 titles or Xbox One titles as part of Games With
Gold.

Publishers must still make money here, even on the Xbox 360 titles we get to keep. We may get 360 games for free, but publisher still gets paid.

 

To be able to play the free games with gold you need to have the gold subscription.

As others have said, it's really up to the deals made with the devs. Maybe put it up on the Uservoice?

 

As I understand it you have to have a gold subscription in order to keep the game. I might try going offline for a while and see what happens to them though.

 

Probably not. It gives people one more reason to keep paying for gold.

 

I mean if you have got an xbox the chances that you are going to have a gold subscribtion are pretty high anyways. Most games even require a gold subscription.

Although it would be nice to keep offline games even without the gold subscription I don't think it will happen any time soon.

 

I doubt it, presumably, we're gonna pay for them using Gold.

 

They used to let you own them then they switched. I have a feeling they won't be switching back any time soon.

 

Xbox One games with gold are usable by you when you have an active gold subscription and have redeemed them. If your subscription ends, you will have to buy the game or resubscribe to xbox live gold to use them again. There is no
way to redeem a past xbox live game with gold when it is no longer available for redemption.

Xbox 360 games with gold are different - you own those whether you have xbox live gold or not - on xbox one and xbox 360.

 

You will always need a gold subscription to access the games.
