Should YouTubers pay game developers?

Why is that they seem to want money instead of shutting down these things? If it was really hurting their livelihoods, I would think they would take them to court or have the videos and such taken down. Why should they be able to profit off other peoples
work since that is what they are complaining the youtubers etc are doing to them? Seems hypocritical more than anything.

I'm not entirely sure what other people's work game developers are profiting from, but I'll digress from that.

The thing about much of the content on Youtube, under the US copyright laws developer don't have to right to shut down videos, monetize other people's videos for their own profit, or take them to court to have the videos taken
down. The videos are protected under the "Fair Use" clause of the law.

Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 106 and 106A, the fair
use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship,
or research, is not an infringement of copyright. In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include—

(1) the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
(2) the nature of the copyrighted work;
(3) the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
(4) the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.
The fact that a work is unpublished shall not itself bar a finding of fair use if such finding is made upon consideration of all the above factors.

Society has spoken and it values what piwdepi does far more than it values the efforts of the developers of the game.

He is really not much different than other high paid celebrities. The reason these people get paid so much is because they have a flock of followers.

Celebrities get millions just to do a single one minute advertisement. They are not any better at doing it than anyone else is. I could easily find several people willing to do it freely just to get face time on tv. Their value
is not in the work they do. It is in the size of the flock that follows them.

I don't understand what people see in him and his videos to be honest. He's realised that it has come to the point where he doesn't have to do jack and people will still view and like it like some brainwashed cult... just like most of the music industry
these days. I mean he could probably sit in front of the camera and make fish faces for ten minutes (heck, for all I know, he could already have done that) and people would still think it was the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Copyright infringements for a person's gameplay doesn't sound like fun. Granted I care for the developers, but if someone is playing their game with a following, it encourages others to buy the game, so it's really just another type of advertising.

People who are simply unwilling to accept the fact that their years invested in hard work doing construction, engineering, or whatever else they do is just not as valuable as one of pewdees 10 minute commentaries.

They dont like seeing people get easy money because of all the effort they put into working for theirs due to their mistake of picking a lesser form of income.

While it's not video game-related per se, it's the same idea.... I've had about 4 of my videos flagged for copyright, as they are music cover songs. I always respond the same way that they are non-commercial, doesn't harm the market for the original product
and are covered under the fair use act. (Keep in mind I've turned off ads on my videos)

Every "strike" has been dropped, but I do feel a little guilty. I guess notsomuch when you consider guys like 'Boyce Avenue' who have made an entire career on YouTube for making money off of cover songs they do.

After watching mos of that video, I really want to buy Fez. LOL

It's a great game. The 360 version is broken but you can get it on cross buy for all 3 Sony consoles for £4.99 in real money. Probably cheaper if you're unfortunate enough to live in a 3rd world country like USA or even a wealthier place like Africa.

I have purchased more games based on Let's play videos in the last few years than those based on reviews or hype alone. Some videos end up being free advertising for the games.

Like many have said, many of the popular channels bring more than just footage of the games. Personally, I watch for the personalities.
