  1. Should I hook an Ethernet cable which is connected to my Xbox to my modem or my router?

I was just wondering on whether I should hook up an Ethernet - which is connected to my Xbox - to my router or modem. I recently got a new modem which is supposedly to be a lot better than the previous one we had. I’ve been looking online to get a concise answer on whether I should plug it into this new modem, or just keep it in our router (which I’ve been doing), but couldn’t find any. Which would give me better performance when playing games?

    :)

Should I hook an Ethernet cable which is connected to my Xbox to my modem or my router?

    Hello BugsyQuinones,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

It is recommended to connect your Xbox to your router instead of your modem. This is because your router acts as a central hub for all your devices, including your Xbox, and provides additional features such as network security and traffic management. Connecting your Xbox directly to your modem may also cause issues with your internet service provider's terms of service. Therefore, it is best to connect your Xbox to your router using an Ethernet cable for optimal performance.

We hope this helps you with your issue. If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us again.

    Sincerely,

Wifi Media share Xbox - Mac

I'm hooked up to a Cisco DPC3825 DOCSIS 3.0 Gateway (Roger's Canada) modem / router.

I had the ethernet cable connected directly from the modem into my xbox.

However, when I selected test Wireless Network it told me to unplug the ethernet cable first!?

Now I have unplugged the ethernet cable and connect to Xbox Live via Wifi and also connect to my computer faultlessly. It's just weird that I can't use both...?

For the last year or two my xbox has been disconnecting every one to two hours

No problem! I'm willing to try anything to fix this issue, it's been annoying since 2 years ago when it started. (when my brother got his xbox).

    - Well i looked at my modem and took out the ethernet cable connecting to the router, put a ethernet cable into there and hooked it up to my xbox directly but it didn't seem to work I hit join xbox live via direct connect but it instantly said there was
no connection. I may not be doing something right but I'm not sure. It just kept saying i didn't have a connection. It's a brand new modem. It seems like it needs a connection to the router for it to work at all. There's only one ethernet port so I cant plug
both in. Am I doing something wrong or do i have a bad modem or something? (if it helps, as soon as i hook up the router and everything my internet is fine again)
