Should I have to pay to change my gamertag under this circumstance?

Around 12 years ago, I bought an XBOX 360 to use offline only and had to install an update to get a game to work, so I signed in with my msn email address. I don't remember even having to choose a gamertag at the time. Fast-forward 12 years to today...I
recently upgraded to Windows 10 (hesitantly) and decided to try Sea of Thieves. I used my old MSN account because that's the only Microsoft account I have, and when it logs me into the game, I notice that it's using my full name as my gamertag. So a friend
tells me I need to go change it. At that time, Microsoft tells me that I have already used my one-time free gamertag change (huh? I never used XBOX Live, much less changed my gamertag) and that I'm gonna have to pay $10 to get my real name off my gamertag?

I'm waiting on a call from Microsoft, but since I'm getting a response here, I'll ask. Is the game I purchased now stuck on this account? Can I start another account or get a refund? I would have never used this account to purchase the game if I knew
any of this. I will not be paying $9.99 to get my real name off of the account. It's not as if I just don't like the gamertag I have, I just don't want to get doxed!

There are some instances where the system will "set" a Gamertag for you automatically, in any other instance, the Gamertag is chosen by the user. Unless it is one of those cases where it was automatically set, it will require a charge to change it.

I understand it was established a long time ago, and hasn't been used, but the rules are in place to prevent abuse, squatting, and spam, so although it is not ideal for your situation, that is the course of action.

You can always reach out to support.xbox.com/contact-us and plead your case to Offical Support in your concern for privacy, but the rules are established.

Perosnally i feel everyone should get one free one a year. But sadly our wishes havent came true. Yet.

Yes, you will have to pay if you want to change your tag. A free change is only available if you were given a randomly generated tag when you created your account and you are changing that tag for the first time. Since the tag you have is not a randomly
generated one, you will have to pay to change it.

As Onyx mentioned any games bought on a account are linked to that account, You can't transfer data or games between accounts. You can change the primary email associated with the account though. That may help you.
