    Hi,

I have an Game Pass Ultimate subscription. I have a gaming PC at home and a Laptop that I use, when I'm on the road. I wanted to install my games from the Xbox (beta)-App on an external HDD, so I can use them on both the PC and the Laptop and only have to
download the games once. All major gaming platforms (e.g. Steam and Battle.net) allow this.

First of all, I have to say it's quite complicated and not very intuitive to install games from the Xbox (beta)-App on an external HDD. If I select my external HDD as default for installing new games in the App, the App tells me, my HDD would not be configured
yet to install new games. If I click on the link inside the App, it leads to a windows configuration menu, where I can set the default drive for the installation of new Apps. I then have to make my external HDD my default folder for new Apps to get it configured
correctly and then change it again to my internal drive. I am now able to install games from the Xbox (beta)-App to the external HDD and normal Apps to my internal. First question here is? Why the hell do you make this so complicated? And why can't I just
choose any path like "D:\Games\" to be my default folder for new games. I really don't get why this decision was made this way. However, at least it works on this machine now.

Next thing I wanted to do was using the same external HDD and the installed games on a different Laptop. So I made the same steps as mentioned above, but I cannot set the same external HDD as a default for new installed Apps on this PC. This is because I
get an error message saying that this HDD already contains Apps from a different PC and I would have to delete those to install Apps from the second PC. Yes it does contain Apps already. But, whats the problem here? Do you really want me to download every
game again for my laptop? And to buy another external HDD since you don't allow to install games from to different PCs on the same external HDD? Deleting the Apps and making the HDD default for the second PC doesn't work by the way. I'm getting an error here
saying that the HDD could not be configured as default device for new App.

    :)

Sorry to say you will need to download each game onto each PC. It has to do with how Windows works. Registry entries, device drivers etc.

I understand where you're going here, but for Windows 10 games, it actually doesn't have anything to do with the registry or device drivers.

In actual fact it's part of the rules of Universal Windows Platform Apps. UWP apps have to be encrypted and sand boxed. For your run of the mill Windows App, this makes sense. Apps that are sand boxed from the OS can't make unauthorised changes to the
the system and with encryption, they can't be modified or copied to other machines, well, not easily anyway.

Yes, I know online digital stores like Steam, Origin, GoG, Epic, etc., etc allow you do copy/move your games to pretty much what ever drive you like and run them on another machine, but Windows Apps don't work this way. For that, I can't give you a clear
    definitive answer.

External Hard Drives on XBOX ONE: system update causing failure?

Reading through the comments and adding my experience also, I run multiple HDD, one is the Xbox Seagate Game drive (HDD) and the other is a generic (HDD). I am also on the Insider beta ring.

I haven't had any issues with any external or internal drive to date.

Aside from formatting the drive using the Xbox Interface I'm not sure what else to suggest at this point, providing the error code in the forum may help dig deeper into this.

    I NEED HELP

First let's double check that the external HDD works. Try to connect to a PC. If the PC detects the HDD, format the HDD.

The plug to your console to see it detects the HDD apply the Xbox Format again.

    Hope that works!

    Regards!
