Shadow of War save data gone

I've been enjoying Shadow of War on game pass pc, so much so that I bought the definitive edition, but then when I tried to play the other day my save was gone with new game being the only option. I found a post with a lot of people having the same problem
and replied asking if it was ever solved but they only locked the thread.

I'm assuming I won't be able to get my 20 hour save back and I might be willing to start over since I permanently own the game now, but not if this can just happen again when I get back to 50% completion. Has there been any kind of resolution for this problem
or is it just a gamble whether you can actually play through the game?

I've seen this issue come up a few times, I'm actually surprised the game devs haven't resolved it yet. So yes it could still be a gamble. I would check to see if the game has any type of official support you could reach out to.

I contacted support from WBGames and in the reply got "We recommend reaching out to Microsoft as you are playing the Windows Store version of Shadow of War to see if you are able to access any saved data that could be stored in the cloud. "

Though cloud saves are listed under the games capabilities, I can't find any options to manually use it or turn it on through the game or the Xbox beta app. Am I just looking in the wrong place or is there not actually cloud saves for it?

I had the same problem, though I didn't notice until the Xbox One had already saved over my cloud data, so now I have no progress on my Xbox 360 as well. All other backward compatible games I've tried (Gears of War 3, Assassin's Creed, Shadow Complex) all
work perfectly, just Forza Horizon. It showed a "syncing" screen when I first loaded as though it was download the game save, but once I got to the main menu it started a new game and now all progress was gone.

I know Gears of War 3 reads some sort of data from the Online Data save in your storage folder (which should be fine). I know I've cleared my system cache, and my rankings in that game haven't gone anywhere.
