Setting up a new Series S - Issues

I’m attempting to set up a new Xbox Series S. I go through the process of set up with the app on my phone and it begins the update process.

The update seems to stall at 71% and after about 1 hour it turns itself off. I turn it back on and I get the screen showing the controller telling me to turn the controller on. I turn the controller on but it does nothing. I attempt to pair it and it looks to be paired but I still get no response from the console.

I eventually do a soft reset where I hold the power button down for 10 seconds to shut it off and then unplug the console for 10 mins. When I turn it back on it now shows it’s searching for updates but the spinning circle doesn’t spin and it sits here indefinitely.

I have since tried the factory reset and I get to the troubleshooting screen but again it can’t get the controller to work so I can’t select any of the options.

I once again did the soft reset and now it brings me to the account selection screen (choosing account to load into). But of course I can’t select anything because the controllers won’t connect. I have tried other controllers even the one I have for my Series X and it won’t work on the Series S. I am at a loss. I have no idea what to do. I’m thinking the system didn’t update properly and that is effecting the ability to connect to the controllers....but this is just a guess. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

With update issues like these, we recommend following the steps mentioned in Troubleshoot system updates on Xbox | Xbox Support page. However, if the issue persist, it can be a hardware issue, therefore your console will need to be serviced. If it still under warranty, you can request a repair order for it using the link below.

So I ended up purchasing a new Xbox. I purchased a series S for the time being. I have sold the Series X, before selling the issue still persisted. After buying a new series S the problem no longer is an issue for me. I am still looking to buy a new series X in the near future in hopes of the problem to be resolved. Are you using a wired or wireless internet connection?

Try a wired connection (ethernet cable) to your network hardware and restart the console. It should connect and do the required OS update.

If wireless choose a factory refresh of the console. After the refresh is complete, input the console setup details again.

No worries, it's the setting for Xbox Series S as well. By the way, what is the exact error or issue that your son is getting whenever he is trying to play or sign in on Xbox Series S?
