    Seriously, Microsoft?

Installed Xbox One today to play Halo 5.

So finally after an hour of sucking the data from the disc, we're forced into an 18Gb update. We aren't even playing multiplayer online, we just want to play the local campaign. We don't have the best connection (10Mb DSL) so we're forced to wait it out
the next few hours. To top that off the Gears of War game included with the console is a digital download which is also queued. So we wont be playing anything on the new console any time soon.

Thanks MS for wasting our time. Very disappointed. Heading back to the PS4.

    :)

put console on instant on, let them download in the background, go an do something interesting, come back later to play with everything installed, simples.

No, the PS4 doesn't download faster, obviously they use the same Internet connection - though I'm not aware of their independent optical read speeds. Yes it is updating in the background. its the coming back later part that is frustrating. Having to wait
for many hours before first play. There was no way to refuse the update. I guess Tzar of Kaos has a point. Still...

    Seriously, Microsoft?

by digital and pre download before launch if you don't wanna wait, installing and times are well documented, no point complaining after the fact.

I agree EnenDaveyBoy. The ability to pre-order the games eliminates most of the waiting. Mine typically download during the night so I never really know it until I log on and there they are.

Yeah, that would make pre-order a little difficult. Seriously, Microsoft? :) Unfortunately, large downloads are where all the games are headed. A reliable fast internet circuit can be a best friend. Happy Gaming!

OP does raise a good point though, it doesn't bother me that much, but I was surprise that Halo 5 went "Gold" like a month before release, and then had a massive day one patch, I always figured going Gold meant that the game was done, I understand small
patches for bugs and whatnot, but having to download a quarter of the game again seems wrong to me.

Thing is with games now they can't fit everything on the disc so the rest is a day one download.

Welcome to gaming in 2015/16 & beyond.

I'm lucky as I have a fast internet connection but I can see how this would be a problem for a lot of people who don't.

OP, just set your console to offline to avoid having to download the update too. Then just connect it when you go to sleep. I hope you know that there is no split screen, since you said "We just wanted to play the "local campaign."

For those wondering PS4 installs from disk faster than the xbox one. It also downloads all updates in the background so the OP could play the campaign and not have to wait for the entire thing to update like on xbox one. Though of course any online features
will not be available until it updates of course.

I don't remember Witcher III having a huge update on release; big story driven game with nice graphics. Fallout 4 comes in at slightly over 28Gb, with a day one patch just under a 500Mb, and the most recent of 1.2Gb; seeing as they can fit 50Gb on a Blu-Ray...Just
don't know if I can buy that argument.

Sloppy programming or just a clever way to hide D.R.M. is my take.

    Peace, J.R.
