    Hi, my series x concole just can't detect the usb drive after a certain amount of time(two days in my case). My PC couldn't read the disk as well afterwards. I had to format it on ps5 and then again on pc into NTFS format. This is how I solved it for the first time.The same problem occured again two days later after I inserted the disk into the console and somehow it can't be detected all over again. I was wondering is something wrong with the concole so it messed the hard drive up?

    Appreciate your help.

    Hi,

    Series X|S optimised games can only run on either the internal storage or expansion card. You can 'store' Series X|S on a USB hard drive/SSD for later but you can't play them from these drives as they're not fast enough.

    Xbox One games that are not optimised for Series X|S can be run from USB Storage.

    I thought the X had been designed to "only" work with the designated Seagate 1TB drive (the one that costs £250 or whatever it is)
    No, not quite. Series X|S games can only run from internal or expansion card, but Xbox One games can still play directly from USB 3.0 mechanical drives or SATA SSD's with USB adaptors.

    You can Store Series X games on external USB drives, but you can't run them there.

    Hi,

    No, sorry it won't work. The USB ports on the Series X|S are USB 3.1 which have a maximum speed of 500MB/s. This means, no matter what drive you buy, no matter what speed it's rated at, you're stuck at the max speed of the USB port.

    The only drives that can be used for Series X|S games are either the internal or the storage expansion card.

    I have the Expansion card for my Series X. I also have an external 2TB USB SSD in an enclosure. I can only use the external SSD for Xbox One games. They do load a lot faster than a mechanical hard drive, but I can't play my Series X games off it.

    If your game is now a Series X optimised title, it can no longer be played off an external hard drive. It must be moved to either the internal storage or an optional expansion card.

    External USB hard drives are too slow to play Series X optimised games. None Series X games will still run from your external drive. The internal storage in the Series X is a fast NVME SSD. These drives are several times faster than mechanical hard drives.

    Why can I not install game pass games on the USB external hard drive?

    Series S/X games cannot be played from a hard drive connected via USB. Series S/X games can only be played from the internal drive or the official expansion cards that attach directly in the back of the console. Again, no USB connected drives can play Series S/X games.
