    (Sea of thieves) Very high latency to Microsoft datacenters in UK from Romania (110-150ms)...


    This started around Q1 of 2022, usually my ping would be 70-80ms before, since then every day no matter if it's peak time or not my ping is always 110-150ms.

    The interesting part is that if i connect through a VPN for example to Netherlands, I have a stable 60-70ms ping on the same UK datacenter.

    I traced the connections in both cases and it looks something like this:

    No VPN: Romania-ISP routing(15ms)-Vienna Microsoft Datacenter(58ms)-*internal routing*-UK datacenter 110-150ms

    VPN to NL: Romania-NL VPN- Amsterdam Microsoft Datacenter(50ms)-*internal routing*-UK datacenter 60-70ms

    Why is Microsoft prioritizing regional distance to Datacenters over latency and how can my ping through a VPN be two times faster than without?

    Is there something I can do to lower the ping beside having to use a VPN to get a decent ping?

    Because you shouldn't be connecting to a server in uk unless you are doing something you shouldnt

    Are you trying to access uk cloud play?

    Romania isnt a supported region

    The Sea of Thieves servers are hosted in the UK Microsoft datacenter.

    A question for Mister Ohnaka.

    Is the latency accurate for normal xbox servers.

    Apparently when testing connection it pings servers in Seattle, Washington no matter where you are in the world.

    So if you are on the other side of the atlantic ocean like in the UK you get high pings of over 150ms.

    Does this mean the UK always gets a sub-standard connection or are we actually connected to servers in the UK?

    @DUTTY - I have no idea how you ever got 13ms on the MS network connection details but rest assured there's nothing wrong with your ISP or your connection. 150ms is the norm for UK.

    I'm not sure why support are giving you the run around - but they haven't lied. The 150ms latency is just for connecting to whatever server they use for the network test - it doesn't necessarily mean that all network related connections have a 150ms latency.


    To be honest there is no way of knowing what the true latency is with regards to UI serving MS servers (unless you stick some sort of packet listener on your network).

    All I know is that even though the MS network test states latency of 150ms+ when I play Titanfall it shows as 25ms (and that's the most important thing).
