Satellite broadband downloads

Hey all,

I've moved to a new house in the countryside, which has meant the only internet option was satellite broadband. This would be fine, as I don't really play many online games these days.

The problem comes when trying to download games and or their updates. Because it can be quite unstable and have short disconnects. So the Xbox app needs to constantly be told to restart the download.

Is there a way to adjust the amount of retries the app will do before stopping a download and giving the error? Or increase the timeout timer limit, that I assume is built in, so I don't have to constantly watch it and restart the downloads.

Thanks!

:)

i dont believe there is a way to adjust it, a stable connection is needed, but there are a few things you can try like : making sure any other device is disconnected while you do your downloads/updates, close any other apps or games and pause any other downloads
that may be going.

if you find your connection to remain unstable maybe speak with your provider as they may be able to tweak things their end. if its a new move it may take a little while for it to become more stable.

Thanks for the quick reply XBA_Hype.

I suspected that might be the answer. Since I couldn't find anything to suggest it could be changed. I wish the app would automatically retry, like steam does, once it sees it has connection again.

Internet options for xbox live?
I was thinking about trying a satellite company or try Verizon mobile broadband but does anyone know if this will be fast enough.
Satellite should be fast enough. Your problem will be latency. Latency won't matter much for
downloads and streaming, but multiplayer gaming is right out.
Some of the speeds they advertise are around 1.5 MBPS.
Mobile broadband will have lower latency than satellite, but lower bandwidth. Having said that, the latency's still pretty high
(200ms or so).

You could mix and match - use satellite for streaming video and downloading DLC and content, then switch to mobile broadband for gaming.

Network Issues

Hi,

I'm not an expert on Satellite Broadband, but I would expect online services such as online multiplayer to be virtually impossible, as stated because of the high latency and ping times. This is due to the distances involved transmitting to a satellite in
space and then back down again.

Having a quick look at google, the average ping times for satellite is about 600ms. Once a gamer starts getting ping times of about 100ms, they will experience problems with stutter and rubberbanding.

Unfortunately I don't see how this will ever improve with satellite broadband, as the transmission times are limited simply by the laws of physics.
