If you're encountering issues with an Xbox One controller, we've got you covered! Below you find a list helpful steps to get your controller back into action.

    My controller won't power on

If your controller will not power on, try the following solutions below:

    • Solution 1: Replace the AA batteries in your controller
    • Solution 2: If you are using the Xbox One Play & Charge Kit, check to make sure that that the battery is still charging. If it is not charging, check out our Troubleshoot the

Xbox One Play & Charge Kit
      page.
    • Solution 3: Try using a USB cable with your controller. If the controller works, double-check solution 1 & 2 listed above.
    • Solution 4: Disconnect all accessories from your Xbox One console, as there might be a conflict with one of the other devices attached to your console.
    • Solution 5: Power cycle your Xbox One console. To power cycle your console, hold the Xbox button on your Xbox One console for 10 seconds.
If your controller still will not power on after trying the solutions above, try connecting your controller to a different console. If your controller works with a different console, there is most likely an issue with your console. You can check your warranty
status and request a repair by going through the steps listed on our
Getting your Xbox console or Kinect sensor serviced
    page.

If the controller does not work with a different console, there is probably an issue with the controller. You can replace a controller from our
Device Support page and selecting Replace an accessory.

My controller will not connect to my console

If you are unable to connect your controller to your console, run through the solutions below:

    • Solution 1: Replace the batteries or recharge the battery pack
    • Solution 2: Power cycle your Xbox One console. To power cycle your console, hold the Xbox button on your Xbox One console for 10 seconds.
    • Solution 3: Try connecting the wireless controller again by going through the following steps:
    1. Hold down the wireless connect button until the Xbox button flashes
    2. Hold down the wireless connect button again. The light on the Xbox button on your controller will stay on, which indicates that the wireless controller is connected to your console
    • Solution 4: Try disconnecting all connected wireless controllers and headsets. Just hold down the Xbox button on your controllers and select
      Controller off.
    • Solution 5: If your controller is still unable to connect after trying the steps above, your controller will need to be replaced. You can replace a controller from our
      Device Support page and selecting
      Replace an accessory.
My controller disconnects while I'm using it

    • Solution 1: It is possible that you might be out of your console's range, so you might need to move closer to your console to ensure that you are within the range of the wireless controller (19 feet). Keep in mind that environmental factors
such as walls and wireless interference from other devices can affect the range.
    • Solution 2: Replace the batteries or the recharge the battery pack to make sure that your controller has enough power to stay connected.
    • Solution 3: Power cycle your Xbox One console. To power cycle your console, hold the Xbox button on your Xbox One console for 10 seconds.
    • Solution 4: Try connecting the wireless controller again by going through the following steps:

    1. Hold down the wireless connect button until the Xbox button flashes
    2. Hold down the wireless connect button again. The light on the Xbox button on your controller will stay on, which indicates that the wireless controller is connected to your console

    • Solution 5: Remove objects that are between the wireless controller and console. Objects such as Laptops, microwave ovens, cordless phones, wireless routers, shelving units and metal dividers might interfere with the wireless controller
      and console.
    • Solution 6: Make sure that your controller is up to date by going through the following steps:
    1. Connect to Xbox Live and press the Xbox button to open the guide
    2. Select Settings and select Kinect & Devices
    3. Select Devices & Accessories, then select your controller
    4. If an update is available, you will see an option to select Update. If no update is available, your controller is already up to date.

Are you running into issues updating your controller?

If you're coming across an error while trying to update your controller, it could possibly mean that there is a problem with the update or that something may not be connected properly. First, try disconnecting and reconnecting the USB cable, headset, and accessories.

If you are trying to update the controller wirelessly, try connecting a USB cable and go through the steps listed on our

    Update your Xbox One controller
    page.

If you come across the "There is a problem updating your controller" error message, try the following steps:

    1. Disconnect all accessories (stereo headset adapter or chatpad) from the controller and apply the update. If it was successful, attach the accessories that you removed and attempt the update again. This does not work, move on to step 2.
    2. Perform a full power cycle of your console by holding down the Xbox button on your Xbox One console for 10 seconds
    3. Turn on your console and try updating your controller again
    4. If you are still unable to update the controller, try a different USB cable and make sure that it is firmly connected to your console's USB port and the controller's USB port.
    5. Leave the controller connected via USB and let it sit for up to 5 minutes, as the update may take a while to complete in the background

If you have successfully updated your controller and are experiencing issues, go through the following steps:

    1. Reconnect your USB cable and make sure that it is firmly connected to your console's USB port and the controller's USB port. To recover the controller, wait around a minute for the controller to sync with the console.
    2. Re-run the update by following the steps listed in our
      Update your Xbox One controller
      page.
