    Retimer controller chip

My sons Xbox is playing up, i thought it was the HDMI port so I took it to a repair shop to be looked at. They have said its not the HDMI port but the retimer controller chip on the mother board. Could anyone tell me what this is and can it be fixed please?
And possible places to take it to, thanks

    :)

    Retimer controller chip

Hi, basically, the retimer chip sits just before the HDMI ports and prepares the video signal for transmission to the tv/monitor.

Presumably, the console is out of warranty and certainly would be if a third party has opened it to inspect it!

Unfortunately, discussion around self-repair is not allowed on these forums as it is against the T&Cs.

If the repair shop didn't open the console to inspect it, you could enquire with Microsoft for a repair; out of warranty however, this would be expensive.

This is pretty frustrating that it's a known issue, warranty or not, and they continue to be sold with faulty HDMI retimer chips. I am in the same boat just a few months after warranty expired.

Xbox is only showing black screen once turned on and shuts itself off after about 2 mins of being on

Sounds like the retimer chip has failed, its in charge of the display i had the same problem turn on console but screen says “no signal detected” search it up on youtube theres alot of fixes you can try but ultimately if none of those fixes work it’ll
be most likely the retimer chop has failed

Can I swap the hdmi chip/retimer from two different consoles?

Hi and thanks for reaching out. I hope you’re doing well. I'm an Independent Advisor and a Microsoft user like you and I'll be happy to help you.

If you have soldering and electronic repair skills, it could be feasible to change the HDMI chips or retimers from two different Xbox consoles, but this is not advised. Any mistakes or damage sustained during the swap could result in additional problems or leave the consoles useless because the HDMI chip or retimer is a delicate component.

Additionally, there may be other problems with the consoles in addition to the HDMI chip or retimer, thus changing the component may not always solve the issue. It might be worthwhile to try to fix both consoles if they are out of warranty and you have experience with electronic repairs, but you must do so carefully and deliberately to prevent causing further harm.
