Removing Age Restrictions from Game Pass on PC

This morning I received the following message when trying to install Outer Worlds on my PC: "This is rated above my Restrictions.". I have never set any restrictions on my PC and I am the head family member in the family group.

I have read that removing yourself from the family group can fix this but when I try it states "an unknown error has occured please try again later". And there are no consent settings that I can even access for my account in order to turn it off.

    Help Please!!

    :)

Removing Age Restrictions from Game Pass on PC

Hello, and thanks for getting in touch. I'm Aileen, and I'm here to provide you with advice as an independent advisor.

That message usually comes from Microsoft Family Safety settings — even if you’re the organizer, sometimes restrictions still apply if your birthdate is flagged as underage in Microsoft’s system, or if a setting got stuck in the cloud. Here’s how to fix it:

    1. Check your age on your Microsoft account

    Go to https://account.microsoft.com/profile

Confirm your birthdate is correct and shows you’re 18+

If it’s wrong, update it — but if it’s greyed out, you may need to leave the family group first

    2. Try leaving the family group again

If the “unknown error” shows up:

    Sign in at https://account.microsoft.com/family

Try using a different browser or incognito/private window

If you’re listed as a child under any other organizer, ask that organizer to remove you

    3. Check Xbox Privacy & Online Safety Settings

    Go to https://account.xbox.com/settings

Sign in and verify the settings for content restrictions (set content rating to “Allow all” or “18+”)

Save changes and restart the Xbox app

    4. Remove leftover restrictions (if already 18+)

Go to Windows Settings > Accounts > Family & other users

Remove any child profile links from there if visible

Then restart your PC and retry installing the game

If all else fails and you can’t leave the family group or update your age, Microsoft Account Support can manually review and fix account classification issues — just ask for help with family group/age restriction lockouts.

Please let me know if you need any further assistance. Looking forward to your response.

Game Pass App for PC is age locking me from installing a game despite there being no content restrictions for my xbox live account.

Hey I followed the steps below and everything is set to allow. The Widows store and the Game Pass App on my phone are not applying this age restriction only the Game pass on PC is.
    Thanks

Age Restriction on PC game pass

Hi, I hope you're doing great out there despite the issue that you're experiencing. I am an Independent advisor and I am here to help you in regards to your concern.

In this case, simply sign out and sign back in on your Xbox App then try to install any games again. That should do the trick.

Age Restriction on PC game pass

If any one else is having this problem I just fixed it some how... I went to https://account.xbox.com/ top right hit on your profile ---> ... ---> Privacy and Online Safety. Make sure everything is set to your liking and click submit on all 3 of the tabs (Privacy, Xbox one/Windows, and Xbox 360 online safety) at least that all I did and it just worked. I also started downloading another game and then went back to try and download Doom and that's when it just worked.
