Try checking your friends list to see if someone has added a friend request to you. I've noticed that messages and friend requests come up separate now.

As for the preview program, there is a current preview happening right now. No one can be added while a preview is in progress. You should wait until the current one has been fully released to the public before expecting any emails.

Through the Xbox app you are able to add friends to the in-game friends list. Also we suggest to add friends that are on the Xbox

Hmmm, so did you invite someone you had not planned on playing with? I think that might have happened once, cause someone just logged off and as I clicked the other name came up. I just used that as a time to catch back up with them was all. I think the
important thing is to see the people that are on and it sounds like they might have been and just dropped off, not sure how this would get you in trouble though.
