OP: It's a good question...if you had Game Pass Ultimate and cancelled it, then that would explain it as you would have needed to subcribe to Live Gold for online. If this is the case, then buying it should solve the issue.

If, on the other hand, you have Live Gold (as I suspect) then the issue is the game licence verification checks getting caught out and so, hopefully, the steps I suggested earlier will solve it

You need a subscription to play online. Either Game Pass Ultimate or regular Xbox Live Gold will work. Except for some free to play games, you will always need a subscription to play online.

This regularly happens when people have a game via Game Pass and then buy it and cancel Game Pass.

Any time you start up a game on console or PC, the system does a series of checks to make sure you have a valid licence for the game...the problem arises because the Game Pass check is higher up on the list than the bought game check so it faults at that stage

Try a hard reset of the console: Hold the Xbox (power) button on the console for 10 seconds or until it powers off....unplug the power cord from the console for 5 minutes or so. Plug it back in and try. This often will trip the checks and reset it so that it doesn't get caught up on the Game Pass step. Hopefully that works

If it doesn't, you will need to go a step further and do a reset of the console Operating System...you can choose to leave games and data on it so that's not a problem:

So here's what happened. RDR has 2 versions on the store. The Story and the Online. The Online is the base game and without it, you can't play the Story mode. Now what happened was, the Online was on Game Pass for a long time so all players needed to do was purchase the Story edition to play.

Now the Online was removed from Game Pass recently, making the Story Mode unplayable. In order to access the Story again, you'll need to purchase the base game, once that's done, you'll be good to go.
