RAM Upgrade - 2933 MHz when it should be 3200MHz

    Hello everyone.

I have an MSI GE76 Raider. It came stock with 16GB DDR4 3200MHz, which were 2x8GB Samsung sticks. I recently bought and installed 2x16GB Crucial sticks that ran 32GB DDR4 at 3200MHz. When I installed them, they ran at full capacity, and before installing the 32GB, I checked that the stock 16GB ran at 3200MHz.

I have since removed one of the Crucial 16GB sticks and replaced it with the stock Samsung 8GB stick for a total of 24GB DDR4 at what should have been 3200MHz but is now reporting 2933MHz. I did this to give a set of 1 Crucial 16GB stick and 1 Samsung 8GB stick to my brother for Christmas so we can both have 24GB DDR4 3200MHz.

I've already checked my bios and there doesn't appear to be an option to change the speed. It only reports what is installed.

Any suggestions on how I can possibly get 3200MHz back? Both sets were able to run 3200MHz just fine when they were paired with the same manufacturer.

Inb4 - just install the same manufacturer: I'm trying to keep it so that we can both have upgraded RAM, so that option is a last-ditch effort for me here.

    Thanks.

    -Tony

    :)

    That's not he means

Timings has nothing to do with 3200 or 2955mhz

    Ddr chips have timings

Usually you have to keep them thr same

When you mix and match your timings will be off and because you are mixing capacities you are causing the timings to be off

Ddr is supposed to be paired with the same timings and chips you can't really do 8 gig with 16 and not expect issues the 8 gig will affect the 16 gigs in a not a good way

Your timing could be 7 /2/2

    On the 8

And your timing on the 16 ,could be 4/2/2

The 16 chip would have tk wait for the 8gig to catch up

And that's assuming you don't cause a memory crash

Basically you are creating a bottleneck and expecting it to be smooth when it's not

You are better off keeping the 32 and just buying a pair for your brother or give him the 2 8s

Basivally Dr memory are sold in pairs not single chipsby design

Double rate memory to achieve it your pc send instructions 64bits at a time.to 2 different spots at 7/2/2 if that's your timing on the 8 but if your 16 gig is 4/2/2 then it actually has to slow down to 7/2/2 because you paired it with a 8 running ay 7/2/2

What you can do to solve the problem is use same pairs with same timings

So 16/16 and 8/8 if you have 4 menory slots if you only have

2 well you can only use one pair

And if you have 4 slots you need tk make sure they are in the same bank there would be seperation between the 2 banks

When you buy memory mhz and Generation are only 2 factors to consider

    The timing is also important

Just keep the 32GB in your machine and give the 16GB to your brother....if they use their system for gaming, that should be more than enough

    Ahh I see.

Both sets run at 3200MHz. I googled whether they'll be compatible before installing...

I'll look into that, thank you!

You’re not just mixing brands, you’re mixing capacities. You need to run in dual channel mode for proper speed, and that requires you to populate the correct slots. The timings of the ram almost certainly differ and your motherboard found a happy medium

I figured out the solution. This applies only if you have over clocked computer components. Start by undoing any memory (RAM) over clocks. If that does not work, try undoing GPU over clocks followed by CPU over clocks. Undoing ram over clocks fixed
it for me. I was at 3300 MHz when I had to revert back to 3200 MHz.
Dude.. you know 3200MHz on DDR4 is also overclocking? 2133 is the normal speed, everything above IS overclocking.
