Questions about installing an external hard drive to the xbox one

So I purchased the Xbox One around the time of its release where it had 500 GB for its internal storage. Clearly after a few years that has been taken up and I now find myself about 20 GB left, so getting an external hard drive is almost required at this
point for me. Unfortunately, there are so many different sources saying different things that I would rather just come to the users themselves. Sorry if these are no-brainers to you all, but I'd rather not skip any bases. Here they are:

1. How do I connect it to my Xbox?

2. [This was one I was looking at](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B...c908-45bb-ad2d-6b2aa105e1cd&tag=igndeals14-20) but I how do I connect that to my Xbox? Do I purchase
some USB 3.0 cable separately to connect it?

3. [This video]() I watched on this said that my hard drive would be formatted. Does this mean my internal hard drive on my Xbox? I understand what formatting does, but what exactly does it format because I noticed his Xbox didn't even have to reset itself
nor did any of his games disappear. If I have to redownload my games onto my new hard drive that would be acceptable assuming the only thing that it would take would be time; I don't want to lose any of my saved data obviously. Online games aren't as much
of a problem I *assume* because that data is connected to my Xbox live account but I'm more worried about the saved data of all of my single player games. Do these games stay on my internal hard drive while any future downloads go to my external hard drive?

4. In the case that my last question of #3 is wrong, does the internal hard drive add onto the space of my hard drive (e.g. if I got a 1 TB external then with my internal I would have 500 GB)?

Any help would be greatly appreciated from you guys. I have not purchased anything yet.

Many Games will not load

Hello everyone,

Just a curious question are you guys installing on a external hard drive or internal hard drive? I have seen some external hard drive give this issue many time before hand as myself has had this issue in the past as well.

 

Microsoft fix the Xbox or you lose customers (and credibility)

I've just finished downloading/installing the newest system update for xbox one. The xbox now no longer recognizes my external hard drive. I have tried numerous times restarting the system, as well as unplugging/replugging in the external hard drive.

 

1. Plug it into a USB port.

2. It should come with a cable, but if not, then yes, you'd need a USB 3.0 cable to plug it in.

3. When you plug the hard drive into the console, the console will prompt you to format the hard drive for use on the Xbox. It won't affect anything on your internal hard drive, it just makes the new hard drive usable for the One.

4. Yes. You would have 1TB + the 500gb internal.
