    Question on Insider release notes regarding Donnie Darko 4K Blu-ray playback


    Currently, and beginning with the Alpha channel release notes on May 5th, there is a section that states:

    Blu-Ray Playback We are tracking an issue with poor playback (lost frames) during the 4K UHD Blu-Ray Theatrical Cut of Donnie Darko.

    Can we please get official confirmation as to why this is being tracked? The disc is in fact a bad encode, but some players can still play the title fine while others cannot. Does the tracking of this issue mean that a possible player/firmware/os based fix is being looked into? If not, what is the reason this is being tracked?

    4k support

    several new release Blu-Rays are coming mastered in 4K so its time the Xbox One did an update to support the playback. I have a 4K tv and dont want to pay out for another blu ray surround to get 4k support when the Xbox could and should support playback..its
    only firmware afterall isnt it?

    UHD Blu Rays

    It doesn't support 4K UHD playback.

    If you are referring to "Mastered in 4K" discs those are just 1080p titles made from a 4K master.

    New hardware is required to playback UHD Blu-Ray.

    This is true in practice, but sometimes specs sway consumers despite practicality.



    With Sony being a major stakeholder on the BDA they may have an inside track on what hardware will be needed for 4K Blu-ray. In result, I would not be surprised if PS4 supported Blu-ray 4K native even with launch consoles while X1 launch consoles may be
    incapable of native 4K Blu-ray (but will likely be able to upscale 1080p Blu-ray to 4K with slightly lower fidelity)



    Note that again in practice you need a minimum 10' screen to start seeing differences between 1080p and 4k per Joe Kane (video fidelity legend).

    Xbox one s not playing 4K blurays

    The new minor update that released on the 5th seems to be the culprit... people seem to be having many different issues with Blu-ray playback in particular.

    I've been in contact with Support on Twitter, but we need more people complaining about it because I haven't even seen anyone at MS acknowledge it. Watching Blu-rays in 4k is the reason I bought an S!
