Question about Xbox one having issues playing media thats on a 8TB External WD easystore drive

Okay so this is more of a question to see if anyone has ran into this issue and if there is a way to solve it.

I bought a large external drive for media im currently in a position where i can't get online and watch movies so i've converted all my movies to x264-x265 format to be able to watch them and listen to my music.....well everything that was put on the drive
plays.......as soon as any media data gets put on the drive after 2048 GB it isn't able to be played in Media Player or VLC Beta. All media that is placed on the drive before it gets over 2048 GB plays fine.....i was thinking that its an issue because of
it being a GPT partition. And i cant convert it to MBR partition because then it would make 5405 GB useless....

I also tried making (4) 2 TB partitions on the GPT partition in hopes that it would work, But still it won't work once the data reaches past 2048 GB no matter what partition the data is copied to it. All data after that cant be read.

I also know the drive is fine because when i hook it up to my laptop i have no issues playing any of the data.

So my question is... Is there something i am doing wrong or something that can make this work. Or is the issue due to the fact that the drive is to large and it being a GPT partition that is causing issues with the data not being able to be read within
Media Playing and VLC Beta App?

Xbox One external harddrive problem

I wish to buy an external harddrive for the xbox, and I always wonder this question.......

I am to buy an extremely large external drive, like 8TB, then i am going to store all my games on xbox one on it of course, those I have now and I will have in future.

Then, can I plug out that drive and save media files from PC on it? I have an media library that I would like to back up in external (primary objective) and then I can also watch it on xbox one (secondary objective).

The thing is, if I finished transfering media to the drive and put it back in xbox one, will xbox alter those file without cosent? like, will xbox one delete those file if my future game installment is larger than available space without telling me before it do so? Or will it just outright overwrite the file even if the storage is not full?

I am sick of getting two external harddrive, buying 2x4TB for PC and Xbox is more expensive and in my region, 8TB of internal harddrive for PC is at exact same price as 8TB of USB 3.0 external harddrive.....

I am in such a worry because I have always assume xbox one as an evil, arrogant machine and the media library I wish to back up is very important.....

Issue with movies and other media being read on large external drives in media player.

Just tried after updating alpha skip ahead to 714, issue still persists.

Microsoft if you are reading this forum thread, do realize the issue is when I am trying to transfer from one external drive to another external drive. Internal to external works all day and night.

Your patch didnt clarify that point.

I have bought 2 WD drives

WD 8TB

they are supported for ps4 pro and in theory should support xbox one x as well.

No one on here or reddit has reported issues with WD with power supply bombing on the console.

I have a WD 8TB and a Seagate 8TB hard drive, no issues. Max overall is 16TB. You could in theory get a 10TB and a 6TB hard drive.

The media files are either MPEG-4 or MKV. I can confidently say that the issue is not due to file compatibility as I have many other files in those formats that play just fine.

This is the exact issue: I have an external HDD connected to my Xbox with all my media (movies mainly) files that I have saved throughout the years. When you initially connect an external HDD to the Xbox it asks if this is for storing Games/Screen Captures
or if this is for Media playback. In this case media playback is selected and then all the files currently on the HDD will show up and play without issue.

Now here is the issue. After the initial setup and selecting this HDD as media only, any additional files I add to my HDD the Microsoft Media Player as well as VLC will recognize the file/folder depending on how I have it formatted, but:

1) If the file is not in a folder both programs will recognize the file but will not play it

or

2) If the file is in a folder, then when I open the folder the folder is empty.

This is a new issue and has never happened in the past.

One potential temporary solution I thought of, but I don't know how to do it or if it is possible: Can I have the Xbox forget the external HDD (without clearing the HDD obviously) so as to the next time I plug it in it will recognize the external HDD as
a new drive and I can select Games vs Media again? This way after media is selected all my new files will show up as well.

Update: I restarted my Xbox and reselecting the Games vs Media did not work. When trying to play an individual file (of the new files just added, because all my previous files in the same format work just fine)

Update #2: The external HDD I am using is a WD 8TB Easy store. As I stated above all my old files work but none of the new files do. As my issue was not formatting, I dug out my old HDD (a 2TB Seagate) and added my new files to that. All the new files played
normally. The question is.... why are new files not playing on my WD while they play normally on the Seagate. (BTW: Yes both HDD are formatted the same, exFAT). At least for me this appears to be an external HDD issue. I will do one more update after clearing
my WD HDD before adding everything back, but this will take around 1 day.

Update #3: After erasing all media and adding it back to my WD external HDD all files (including the new ones) play as normal.

Yes I did. The drive im im us is western digital so i looked on their forums. It boils down to using a tool provided by WD to reformat the drive to an older file structure. I used the tool and it worked a treat. I now have over 8tbs on media accessible on
my xbox one s.

The tool only works with WD drives.

I just tested All my external drives to give you and answer. both my 5TB WD_BLACK and 2TB SSD WD_BLACK are fine tranfering from each other while moving cursor up/down with no issue. When I try the same with the 8TB Seagate external trying to transfer to
both WD_BLACK externals and scrolling up/down while the system is searching game file size, my system blinks 3x and shutdown.

Maybe its happening because the 8TB seagate HDD is a desktop powered drive, NOT USB powered drive. I’m currently Alpha Skip Ahead. Before buying this 8TB seagate external I read some review with some issue of drive not loading after a few months or stop
turning on. I dont have does issue except this system shutdown. Hope it helps.
