Purchased Flight Simulator via digital code from target - can't play locally on Xbox

I purchased the Standard edition of Flight Simulator online from Target this past weekend, redeemed the code, installed it and noticed there's a "cloud" icon associated to it, and when I tried to play it, it tells me I can view it in the Microsoft Store and that I need Game Pass Ultimate in order to play it. I have absolutely no intention of purchasing GPU as I am not a big gamer - I currently have Xbox Live Gold as my kids used to play the online games from time to time (which they don't anymore) and it's set to expire within a few months. How can I locally install Flight Simulator so that I can play it without GPU?

Thanks for the reply - yes, I was able to figure it out after I posted the question - should've had my coffee first. I have a One S and FS will only play on the Series S/X. I just ordered the S - should be here tomorrow. Thanks for your help! Happy Holidays!

What console do you have? Flight Simulator will only work for the Xbox Series S/X. If you have an Xbox One, the only way to play it is through the cloud which requires a Game Pass Ultimate subscription.

No. Once you redeem a code there is no way to deactivate it or return it. However, Flight Simulator is a Play Anywhere title, so buying it digitally for Xbox also allows you to redownload it on PC without having to purchase it again. So as long as you sign in with the same account on the PC, you can install it from the Microsoft Store.

I'm not sure who Pam is, but Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 is what you would install on the Series S. The Series S is a digital only console, so you would purchase the game from either xbox.com, the Xbox store, or as a code from another retailer to redeem through Xbox.
