problems with enabling multiplayer on minecraft java edition

I understand that you want to enable your son to be able to access multiplayer.
I apologize for the inconvenienced this has caused you. I will do my best to help you.

It is possible that the system has detected that the account is a child account. Because when the account was made a child account was saved as the birthdate.

To set your expectations properly, even if there will be changes on the birthdate the system will still recognize the first birthdate that's on the account.
But nothing to worry because there is a way for the account to act like an adult.

An organizer account needs to be linked/ added to the account. And the organizer will be the one that will customize your son's privacy and security settings to enable accessing multiplayer and join parties too.

To add an organizer, please sign in the organizer account here: https://account.microsoft.com/family/ >; Add a member> Please add your account.
Once added, sign into your email and accept the invitation.

After that sign in the parent/Organizer account here: https://www.xbox.com/user/settings/privacy-and-... then click on your account.

Choose the option: "In Privacy & Online Safety, click Xbox One/Windows 10 Online Safety."
Scroll down to the second option from the bottom, stating “You can join multiplayer games“. Set this to Allow.
Click Submit to save your changes.

tried that, didn't work, which was very weird. So Im thinking about getting a new Java account soon.

For you to manage it you can simply sign in to https://account.xbox.com/settings.

If the system detects that your account is a child account you will be redirected to a support site and if not you will be able to change it successfully.

If you were redirected to a support page, please sign in to https://account.microsoft.com/family and check if there is an organizer account linked to your account then use the organizer account so sign in to https://account.xbox.com/settings then "allow" the setting on this screenshot:
