Problem with 'Add an existing email address as a Microsoft account alias'

Please be advised that it's not possible to add an existing Microsoft email address to a different Microsoft account. The email address @hotmail.co.uk is a Microsoft account itself. You can only add a Microsoft email address as an alias to your other Microsoft account by creating a new one. To add an existing email address as your alias applies to 3rd party email addresses only that are not yet currently linked to Microsoft account.

You're thinking of alias as a way to link your different Microsoft accounts together...it's not that. Creating a new alias means you're signing up for a new (not taken) email address, but the email to/from this new address will use existing inbox.

If you want to add your 2nd Microsoft account's email address as alias to this one, first you'll have to remove that email address from that account (i.e. sign up for an alias on that account, make the new alias primary, delete the email address you want
to move, wait for 30 days for that email address to be available to the world, then add it to your current Microsoft account as new alias).

In addition to that, in order to change the email address associated with a Microsoft account, you need to follow these steps:

Go to Add an alias (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?linkid=864833). Sign in to your Microsoft account, if prompted.

Under Add an alias, do one of the following:

Create a new Outlook.com email address and add it as an alias.

Add an existing email address as an alias.

Select Add alias.

Notes:

You can't add an email address that's associated with a work or school account as an alias.

An alias or email address can only contain letters, numbers, dot (.), underscore (_) or dash/hyphen (-). Spaces and other special characters aren't allowed.

Existing Hotmail, Live, Outlook.com, and MSN addresses can't be added as aliases, and you can't add an alias that is already associated with another Microsoft account.

It isn't possible to create a new alias using @hotmail, @live.com, or @msn.com. If a Hotmail address is important to you, you need to sign out and create a new account.

Thanks for reaching out here in Xbox Forums. I understand there is an issue with changing alias on a Microsoft Account.

When changing the alias on the account it has to be a new email or a 3rd party email. You will receive an error is you are trying to use an active Microsoft email, for example: hotmail.com, outlook.com.

I recommend reviewing the following article: Change the email address or phone number for your Microsoft account

• A new email address. Select Create a new email address and add it as an alias, and then follow the instructions.

• A non-Microsoft email address (such as an @gmail.com or
  @yahoo.com email address). Select Add an existing email address as a Microsoft account alias, and then select Add alias.

First go to: https://account.live.com

Sign in using the email and password that you use to sign in to your Xbox account.

Now go to Account aliases>Add alias

Now you will get 2 options: Create a new email address and add it as an alias and Add an existing email address as a Microsoft account alias

Create a new email address and add it as an alias will let you create a brand new email ending with @Outlook @Live or @Hotmail

Add an existing email address as a Microsoft account alias will let you add an email that you have already created on to your account (it can be anything, even if it is not a valid email, so check your spelling)

If you choose Create a new email address and add it as an alias : once you create the new email it will kick you back to "Account aliases", click on "Make Primary" under the new email and it will make it the new email on your account, you will now use it
to sign in to your Xbox and Xbox.com.

If you choose Add an existing email address as a Microsoft account alias: Once you add the email that you want it will kick you back to "Account aliases", from here, click on "Verify", it will send you a verification link to the new email, you must go to
your email, login, and click on the verification link, after you do that, come back to account.live.com , go back to "Account Alias", and now click on "Make Primary" under the new email and it will make it the new email on your account, you will now use it
to sign in to your Xbox and Xbox.com.

To delete the old email: Once you have a new primary email, click on "remove" under the old email to remove it.
