problem setting up account

Please see below it looks like you don't have to use the CD Windows 10 should hopefully recognise the controller and install drivers on it's own.

But his email address is already tied to a new profile...it gives me the email is tied to another account error...

Then you would have to use a new email address.. a different one than the one you were going to originally use.

you can close the other account however it takes 30 days for a Microsoft account to be completely close.

You could probably try again to add that email address to your sons account on day 31.

Hey there!

Sorry to hear you are having this problem. What I recommend is to sign in to your sons offline account on the console and press the guide button and select "Join Xbox Live" there it will ask you to add an email address as your Microsoft account.

Follow the on screen instructions and you should be able to keep your sons same achievements, the only thing that is going to change is the GamerTag, but other than that you should be able to have a live account on your sons old offline account.

If you encounter any issues just call phone support at 1-800-4MYXBOX and they should be able to help you out.

Just tell them you want to make an offline profile into an online profile.

if your email address is a Microsoft email (@hotmail, @live, @outlook) then you wont be able to remove your account from the Xbox account.

removing Microsoft email accounts from Xbox accounts permanently deletes the email account and you will no longer be able to access it

all you can do is add an alias email address then promote that to be the main email address.
