Problem accessing .mkv videofiles with XBox One S / X when located on Seagate 8 TB GameDrive

I have the following strange problem if i want to access .mkv videofiles from my Seagate 8 TB GameDrives:

1. all .mkv videofiles work fine with Windows 10 apps like Movies & TV an VLC Player

2. if the .mkv videofiles are copied to my 2 TB Seagate GameDrive they also work fine on my XBox One S and X with Movies & TV or VLC Player app

3. if these files are copied to a 8 TB Seagate GameDrive only some of the files can be accessed by the XBox (they still work fine with Windows 10). Some files are shown with 0 bytes and error 0x80070001 "file can not be played"

4. if i copy the files to another 8 TB Seagate GameDrive, some others can be accessed, and some others can't

5. each of thes files has user "everyone" set to full access

Any Ideas?

Xbox One X Media Player and Film & TV

Just in case the 3.6Tb is also an issue for you, be aware that the 4TB on the packaging are "marketing" TB, which are calculated with 1000GB, whereas "real" TB are calculated with 1024GB.

So
4 marketing "Terabyte" are actually 3.6 Tebibyte, and therefore the size displayed is correct.

As for the videos not playing:

It would help immensely, if you could provide information about the video and audio codecs that were used for your MKV's and MP4s.

For example, while the Xbox One supports Dolby Athmos in the BluRay app, the codecs for Dolby Athmos are not available to the Film&TV app on the console, whereas on the PC you can install codec packs, that make different video and audio codecs available
to that app.

So when you file feedback through the Feedback app available to you as an Insider, please provide exact information with how the video is encoded, and what sound format is used.

Be aware, that MKV is not a format itself, but only a container that can bundle a variety of video and audio codecs, which are not all supported by the Film and TV app on your Xbox console, as you can't install external codecs yourself like you can on the
PC.

 

Xbox One DVR

I am trying to record up to the 1 hour gameplay mark on the xbox one X. When I look on my laptop to edit the videos, one of two things has been happening:

1. Audio and Video are out of sync. Can be up to 5 seconds the audio is behind.

2. More recently, the video doesn't come up at all. The full audio is there, but absolutely no video seems to be recorded.

I have attempted to do this with two different Seagate HDDs, one a 2 TB and the other an 8 TB. Do I need to go spend more money on something else to record my gameplay? I'm guessing this isn't how the xbox DVR is supposed to work.

Sorry to hear it. It's possible that the drives may have a partition that you're unaware of that could be interfering with the files. Please try formatting the larger drives to see if that helps.

Also, please be aware that the drives can only be used either for game storage or video/picture storage. If you have games on the drives then you will experience issues with video/picture files put on the same drive.

 

Check your files to see if they were encoded with a format not listed here:

For example, h.265 encoded .mkv files will not play, or be properly recognized by the Xbox One media player.
