I would just like to ask why are we now expected to pay £50 a game in a fast growing market?

That is a large some of money for what we're receiving,

especially with games such as ghosts when we're expected to pay for season passes for further maps. Or future games like Elderscrolls, where we'll be paying for a disk, xbox live AND a monthly subscription.

Don't get me wrong I like a many of the things Microsoft has produced but I feel like we're getting exploited.

I've been gaming for 20+ years and im starting to feel that the amount these company's are capitalising is going to cause a early retirement.

I would also like to know why they expect people to pay the same for a download, your not having to use money on disk or distributors. If they charged £5 less for a download than RRP I'm sure you would get far better sales and more importantly happier customers.

I'm just hoping that this will get seen and prices reconsidered, as it seems as if your marketing team are coming in drunk or just getting paid so much they have no idea what the average person is getting paid.

I'm hoping there's people out there who feel the same and this can be addressed.

    :)

  3. Why BO is the best FPS on LIVE.

I think BO is more of an over priced XBL arcade title that I ended up buying.

They should have priced it between 40$-50$ tbh. Not 60$

You are not expected to pay for season passes. You choose to. You are expected to pay £50 because companies need to make money. Of course you are being exploited. But not just by Microsoft but by most companies.

  5. I agree that digital games need to be cheaper, but i am yet to pay £50 for any game.

The simple answer is shop around,or wait a few weeks for a price drop.

  6. deals happen all the time. They had Xbox One games forty bucks the other day.

I'm not saying gaming isnt an expensive hobby, but all the games I bought this yr have been less than sixty dollars. MAny of them brand new and even some digital.

  7. well at least this is not the most expensive ongoing hobby you could choose, initial purchase of the console notwithstanding...my friends are paying upwards of 85-90 for transformers figures, and that's not even for the bigger sets like metroplex and whatnot.

I agree, without overheads and markups why are we seeing download versions of the games at a higher cost than those that are being sold by distributors.

Surely this would be a better idea for Microsoft to cut people like Game (i'm from the UK) out of the equation?

Microsoft apparently need game to sell the consoles. i can see it changing with time once everyone has the consoles but for the fans of the games we are getting smashed for having hobbies.

its putting me off wanting to get more games if i'm honest.

  9. If you've been gaming for over 20 years then you'd know that a next gen game for £50 pounds doesn't seem so bad to a game like Street Fighter 2 which would cost up to £79.99 back in the 90's. Take a step further back and you'd see games like Maniac Mansion
on the NES going for £60.

We aren't getting ripped off in cost. The only p**s take we go through as gamers is that we have now become day one games testers on release and then we're only considered the customer when they want to release DLC. Costs in gaming are great and with the
amount of sales that go on in both retail and digital, we have little to complain over in that department.

I just wait about a month after release. You can find the games for half off sometimes.

Come on mate move with the times,

this was back when game Devs were few and far between and it was something you could charge that much for. Now a year after a console has been released it has nearly dropped in price by half and there are hundreds of games available.

You also had to pay for over heads and mark ups on something that's brand new. Today we don't have to pay overheads and markup on the online Microsoft store. times change and we as gamers who support the industry shouldn't be taken for granted.

  12. Brandiesel,

Thats one of the things that most people forget about. They all want it on day one but don't want to pay day one prices. The nets great for many things, but wow has it given all the soft lads instant access to spit.

In the two-three weeks I've owned my latest Xbox I've saved a fortune with some of the sales on the 360 dash, and my favourite place to shop ever, Amazon UK has saved me an absolute stash of coin thanks to amazing sales/deals.

Day one will be expensive. I bought a HDTV once for just under a grand, two months after there was a sale where it was going for less than 700. It happens, just deal with it.

JRC. When the 360 came out the games were priced at £39.99, on the odd occasion a new release would be £34.99. That was 2006... or was it seven? Pretty the same prices as the PS1/PS2/XBOX era. Now its 2014 and pretty much every country has been on its botty
with its hand out because financially everything has been wrecked since about 2005 (most felt the pinch about 2008). Cigs and beer are through the roof when it comes to rising in costs. Food products in well known stores can change by the quid within a matter
of hours, houses are still messed up and petrol is ridiculous.

But now getting back to the cost of gaming in 2007 to the cost in 2014. In cases for the 360 prices went up to around £42.99 - £44.99 on a day one release. Thats under £6 increase from 2007, but probably could go back to about 2001. Not that bad. New gen,
new tech, bigger dev teams. That all needs money, so for a new gen console to have games priced about £5-6 more than the previous gen isn't that much of a surprise.

And as Brandiesel said. You can probably knock up to half of that off in a matter of weeks/months.

yes i'm not saying that getting day one we should see dramatic price drops but how many more consoles have been soled in the same period of time as the Xbox 360? more games, more sales of games. i also believe that with Games on gold and what Microsoft do
put on sale we are in the best time for gaming but i just feel that the price has gone up without justification. The devs aren't always on fixed contracts anyway so there is no need to pay for them to continue after the completion of the game.

Like i said i'm not bashing what the Devs do for us gamers but i also think that there is a large amount of greed. With this being so many peoples hobbies and down time its not going to last if they cant afford it. Surely if there are lower prices more people
    will buy.

  14. There is not a business in the world thats not sole purpose is financial dominance. Event charity companies take a massive percentage from the good causes they're collecting for. People have to eat. Some prefer to eat in an 18 bedroom house is all Priced :D

And even if a dev team is only game contracted, the business overall still has to keep making financial income due to all other outgoings. Not to mentions all the sequels you crazy cakes love.

As for gamers not being able to game because of cost. Don't be naive mate. People have known for decades now that smoking kills and no matter how expensive it gets, they will find away to provide for the kick. Its all about financial priorities mate. If
people got the balance right, then costs would come down anyway.

  15. Historically, cost wise, the early 8-bit and the 16-bit era was more expensive than today. Take Atari 2600 games being sold in the UK in 1980. Atari 2600 games varied between £14.95 and around £29.95. Seems cheaper, but they weren't. That's because inflation
has not been taken into account. With inflation, those games work out between £55 and a whopping £112 per game! Also 15% of that was VAT - UK VAT was 15% from 1979 to 1991.

Going into the 90's, the cost had gone down a bit, but the average Mega Drive or SNES game still cost a little over £50. I think the SNES version of Street Fighter 2 works out at £70 in todays money. Even games in the PS1 and N64 era were roughly the same
price, with N64 being somewhat higher due to Nintendo still sticking to cartridges at the time. The price dropped because even though the development teams had increased, the storage medium had changed to CD-ROM, which was considerably cheaper than the old
    ROM cartridges.

So are Video games more expensive now than when the industry began? Well, going by those figures, apparently not.

And for our American friends, you may want to give this article a read:
