Potential gamertag being used by inactive member

Hello,

I have recently decided that I wanted to change my gamertag to a simpler version because the one I created years ago as a young kid has "Killa" at the end of it. When I attempted to change my name without the "Killa" part, it said the gamertag was already
in use. I searched on Xbox live to see who potentially owns the account and I came across an account with 0G of games played with zero friends.

Now I know this may mean they still use the account in different ways, but I was wondering if somebody has come across this same issue but they ended up being successful in contacting Microsoft to see/potentially deactivate the account? I politely messaged
the user asking if they do not play online to possibly changing their name but find it hard to believe they will answer since they have been inactive.

This is not something customer support can do, and for the very reason you mentioned - the account may be active elsewhere in the Microsoft ecosystem. You are allowed to set the gamertag to be exactly the same, but it will be followed by a series of numbers
(like Gamer123 #1234) to differentiate it from the original.

There is no way to force a tag change for an inactive member. Remember that there are other services such as Zune that also use gamertags. Every now and then MS does release old inactive gamertags but there is no way to know when or which ones.
