thats bothersome! the description on the Amazon site explicitly stated that this is for using HDMI port for video + A/V for audio. I've since found another brand that users seem to have better luck with... and I've ordered. I'm not so upset about being
out $5.00, it is more the frustration that waiting for the part to be shipped is like 8 weeks (and this is after waiting 8 weeks for the first one to show up).

in the second link, read under first the section titled "Digital audio (S/PDIF or TOSLINK) cable":

1. Leave the HDMI cable connected to your TV for video.

2. Connect the HDMI audio adapter to the A/V port on the console.

this infers that you can use the HDMI port for Video and the A/V port for audio... if that is not what it is describing, please clarify.

My guess is that you have a 3rd-party audio adapter that has ALL of the pin lines connected. This makes the xbox think that it should push video and audio both over that cable. The official audio adapter has the video lines disconnected so that the console
knows it's for audio only.

It's only a guess, but that's the way I'm thinking.

I've never had an issue with it on my 360, and I've done it multiple times. I have an older (white) 360 arcade with HDMI. What happens if you boot it up with just the audio connected, and then plug the hdmi in after it's up and running? Do you hear the bootup
sound?
