Payment with MSA funds and card

The reason you are asked to pay the full amount for the card is because Xbox Live does not allow combining payment methods for a single transaction.

You can use Microsoft Store funds or a card, but not both.

To fix this, you'll need to first use your Microsoft Store funds to pay for most of the game.

Once you've used all your funds, Xbox Live will let you use your card to pay the rest of the amount.

To do this, follow these steps:

Select the game you want to purchase.

Click the "Buy" button.

Select the "Pay with funds" option.

Enter your Microsoft Store PIN.

Click the "Pay" button.

Once you've used all your funds, Xbox Live will show you the remaining amount you need to pay. At this point, you will be able to select the "Pay by card" option and follow the on-screen instructions to pay with your card.

Here are some additional tips for paying for games on Xbox with Microsoft Store funds and a card:

Make sure you have enough Microsoft Store funds to pay for most of the game.
If you don't have enough funds from the Microsoft Store, you can purchase more funds from the Microsoft Store.

If you don't have a credit or debit card, you can use a prepaid card to pay with Xbox Live.

On the 360, if you choose credit card it will then ask you if you want to part-pay with the MSA (Microsoft Account funds). That will drain the MSA first, then take the outstanding balance from the credit card.

The MSA is greyed out because the funds there are insufficient, so when it asks for the payment option, you're essentially choosing the one that will add the extra bit to top it off.

As for question 2, you probably need to remove the card afterwards yourself. Not sure though as it's not something I've personally done.

Being logged into the account, here's how:

She needs to be using the Xbox 360 rather than the website (Xbox.com doesn't yet support the funds in the MSA...).

Click through the purchase screen and when selecting payment method the MSA should be greyed out (because it's not enough) but will say how much there is, and then it will list other payment methods (eg credit card).

Choose one of the others; this is now your secondary payment method in effect.

Click confirm purchase and it will ask you if you wish to first apply the funds from the MSA.

Clicking yes will empty the MSA first and the remaining balance will be taken from the secondary payment method.

NOTE that clicking no at this stage will NOT cancel the purchase and will simply apply the whole charge to the credit card.

Like a Gold subscription, because the subscription auto-renews you have to use a payment method that can be auto-billed for each period, ie a credit or debit card and not your MSA funds.

If you do it via the console. after you select PayPal as the payment option it will ask you if you want to take money out the MSA (Microsoft Account) first. This will empty the MSA before touching the PayPal funds.

Edit: This is for normal dowloadable content, eg games, add-ons and so on. For purchasing a Gold subscription, you cannot use the MSA as a source of funds as this is not currently supported. To purchase Gold you need to use either PayPal or a credit card.
