    Yes, but since it starts a recurring subscription the system has to make sure you are able to make the next payment, even if you plan on turning off auto-renewal. So you either need enough funds in your account for the next payment or a credit card/Paypal
    on file as well.

    you can't pay for Xbox Live Gold with a Microsoft balance, the only way to pay for it is by credit card, paypal, and a actual Xbox Gold Gift Card that is only for Gold Subscription
