Pay an outstanding subscription with account balance

Unfortunately he has to pay the outstanding balance before the code can be added to the account. The balance cannot be paid with a subscription code.

Thank you for reaching Microsoft Xbox Forum support. The reason you were asked to provide another payment instrument was to provide a backup payment plan for your subscription since you are using only the Microsoft balance. The step is completely safe because
the payment instrument will not be charged and can definitely be removed after having the subscription active on your account. Rest assured that it will not be charged as long as you are t pay with the Microsoft account balance. After paying for the subscription
successfully you can follow the steps below to remove the payment instrument.

The steps to remove a payment instrument:

1. In a browser, sign in to your Microsoft Account Microsoft account | Home.
2. Select the Payment & billing dropdown, and then select Payment options.
3. Select Remove card or Remove account beneath the payment option you want to delete, and then select Remove to confirm.

You may see this error if you have an outstanding balance on your Microsoft account. To resolve this problem, you'll have to pay your outstanding balance. Here's how:

1. Sign in to your
   Services & subscriptions page with your Microsoft account.
2. Find your past-due subscription in the list. The outstanding amount will be in red.
3. Select Pay now, and then follow the instructions to pay the balance due.

Note If your subscription is past due, adding a code will not settle the balance you owe. You will have to settle the outstanding balance using the steps above
before redeeming your code.

On account.microsoft.com do you see your subscription listed under services and subscriptions? Also check there for any outstanding balances. If you have an outstanding balance you would have to pay it before purchasing a new subscription.
