Party chat privacy settings issue

I know how frustrating it is when you're ready to hang out in party chat and you keep getting blocked by privacy settings, especially when you've already checked and reset everything. Let’s walk through this together and fix it step by step.

Start by checking your Microsoft age setting. Sometimes the system still treats accounts as restricted if the age is under 18, no matter the privacy settings. You can verify this at account.microsoft.com/profile — just make sure your birthdate shows you’re 18 or older.

Next, go to account.microsoft.com/family. If you’re part of a family group, even as an adult, the settings there might still override your own. If you're listed as a child or anyone else is managing your settings, it could block party chat. If that’s the case, you can either leave the group or ask the organizer to update the restrictions.

Then, go to account.xbox.com/settings and double-check these specific options under the tab for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10 devices:

“You can join multiplayer games” → set to Allow

“You can communicate outside of Xbox Live with voice and text” → set to Everyone

“Others can communicate with voice, text, or invites” → set to Everyone

Even if you’ve done this already, it’s worth toggling them again to refresh the settings.

After that, power cycle your Xbox. Hold the power button on the console for 10 full seconds, wait a bit, then turn it back on. This clears out any network or system cache that might be hanging onto the old settings.

Also, check your NAT type by going to Settings > General > Network settings. If your NAT is Moderate or Strict, that alone can cause voice issues in parties. You’ll want it to be Open.

Lastly, if you have a Windows PC, you could try starting or joining a party through the Xbox Game Bar. It sometimes forces privacy settings to sync properly with your account.

Hello it could be that you need to change your privacy settings to allow you to be in "game chat" however if you start an xbox party and then switch to game chat this may solve your issue as an idea

Turns out the problem wasn't his privacy settings. I decided to have a look through his messages, turns out Xbox had banned his communications, but cheers anyway dude

Is your brothers account an adult account or a child account and you're trying to add exceptions to the defaults?

Are you in a party - that could be blocking it. It could also be game-specific game chat settings or your Xbox Live privacy settings.
