Party chat only works when party overlay is on (PC)

Since the feature you are looking for is no longer included in the latest update. We would encourage you to send a suggestion to Team Xbox.

Since Xbox Game Bar is overlay by design, you are free to move the overlay function to different locations in your screen. Should this be much effective if the Xbox game bar is to run in the background and you'll still be able to use it function, this calls for an idea to be raised to the right people - Team Xbox.

It used to work in the background before the latest update. To make it work again, you have to pin it to your desktop:

Step 1: Hit the windows key & the 'g' key at the same time

Step 2: Start or join a party

Step 3: Hit the pin in the top right hand of the party window

This will pin the overlay to your screen when you close it so you might want to move it to a place that isn't in your way.

Not a moderator. Just a person who discovered a work around lol.

If you would like to suggest that the Xbox Game Bar works in the background instead of overlaying,

you can submit that suggestion to Xbox Support https://support.xbox.com/survey/SuggestionGamePassPC

If you are experiencing issues with the party chat while the game bar is overlaying, we suggest enabling "Push to Talk" before speaking to your party.

To enable or disable "Push to Talk," in the Party widget, select the Party options button, choose Party audio, and then select or clear the "Enable Push to Talk" checkbox.
"Push to Talk" is disabled by default.

Thank you for responding, before this latest update to game bar I could have the party in the background without the overlay and people would hear me. I didn't realise that feature got removed.
